CMA Exam Academy’s Strengths

Weekly Step-by-Step Program

Read our thorough CMA exam academy review to understand why it's a top choice for CMA candidates seeking a structured and comprehensive learning experience.

If you require guidance and structure then this proven 16-week study program is perfect for you. There are two 16-week programs – one for Part One and another for Part Two. Each 16-week program is designed to tackle all the essential learning components as outlined by the IMA (Institute of Management Accountants), in order to pass the exam. If you’re worried about sticking to a tight schedule, don’t be. This is simply an outline that you can flex to your schedule. Just make sure you don’t skip over any exam topics in your CMA exam review.

1-on-1 Coaching Support

The program includes weekly live calls with students on top of personal coaching from a seasoned Certified Management Accountant! One-on-one coaching is by far the most important factor in a CMA prep course if you want to pass on your first exam attempt. Why? Because a coach can offer you accountability, progress reports and help you tackle issues and topics that are hindering your study progress. No other course comes with this level of dedicated support!

CMA Test Bank with PassRate Technology

CMA test banks are a great tool for testing your knowledge with a wide range of questions that are structured and formatted just like the ones found on the actual test.

The test bank contains both 100% unique CMA exam questions, and retired test questions from previous exams to offer you the real exam-day experience. You can take full length mock exams by topic to assess your knowledge of the exam material and pinpoint your weaker areas, or practice on exam simulations to get familiar with the exam format.

Each exam simulation practice test is timed to put you under the pressure of the clock, just like the real exam. And thanks to our innovative PassRate Technology, you will know you’re ready for the real exam when you reach 86% and above on your test bank dashboard.

Audio + Video Tutorials

Not everyone learns the same way, which is why audio and video content are great CMA study materials. If reading isn’t your personal learning style then this auditory style may be more beneficial for you. Each individual tutorial is bite-sized to make consuming new prep material easy and reduce overwhelm.

Downloadable Material + Free International Shipping

Prospective students can download audio review files to study on-the-go. If you want flexibility and convenience, these are the best CMA study materials for you. You’ll also receive your textbooks in paperback within a week after enrolling to the academy. You’ll get it delivered to your doorstep for free – no matter where you are in the world.

Pass or Refund Guarantee

If you don’t end up passing your exam after completing this program, there is a 100% refund guarantee. This guarantee holds you accountable to putting in the required effort in the first place. We also believe 100% in our material, so if you put in the time, but still don’t pass we will refund you the full price. For full refund details, click here.

CMA Exam Academy’s Weaknesses

2-Year Access

Unlike other CMA prep courses, this one offers a 2-year access limit to their courses for both parts combined. This can be a downside to the program, but considering that the program is only 8 months long for both parts, a 2-year access is more than enough time for most candidates. Unlimited access allows for procrastination. Having a deadline can be motivating to complete the courses and pass the exam which is your ultimate goal.

CMA Exam Academy is Best For:

The coursework is thoroughly organized, with a detailed 16-week study guide for each exam part. Wiley CMAexcel’s Strengths

Free Trial

When you are choosing the best CMA review course, one thing you will want to take into consideration if cost. Offering a free trial, Wiley CMA Review eliminates the fear of investing in expensive CMA study materials you don’t actually like. For two weeks you can have full access to their program to determine whether or not it is the right CMA exam review for you.

Questions in Textbook

Unlike the other CMA online classes, Wiley includes over 175 multiple-choice questions and 53 retired essay scenarios/questions in the textbooks. This is a great way to test your knowledge as you study without having to buy a test simulation bank right away, but note that you’ll need one eventually.

Packet of Essay Questions

In addition to the essay questions that are included in the textbooks, the learning system also includes a packet of retired essay questions to continue practicing your comprehension and speed.

Exam Simulation

Their online exam simulation closely resembles the actual exam experience which is super beneficial in acclimating candidates to the exam format.

Wiley CMAexcel Weaknesses

High Cost

The cost of Wiley’s learning system is the most expensive in this CMA review course comparison, costing $1,800 making it unaffordable for many candidates.

No Money-Back Guarantee

Unlike other CMA review course providers, Wiley does not offer a money-back guarantee. I highly recommend taking advantage of the free trial to make sure this is an investment you are willing to make.

Gleim CMA

Gleim CMA Review Strengths

Exam Simulation

It’s very important to practice simulated exams in the same format as it will be presented to you on exam day. The more familiar you are with the format, the more likely you are to not get choked up on the actual exam day. Gleim provides candidates with a simulation that mimics the real exam.

Personal Counselor

Candidates have access to their own personal counselor that you can pepper with questions and ask for advice. Whether you get stuck on a practice question in the simulation or aren’t sure where to focus your study efforts, the counselor is readily available to guide you through the learning process.

Money Back Guarantee

In the event that you do not pass, Gleim offers you a money back guarantee. If you have any fear about passing then this can help assuage it.

Gleim CMA Review Weaknesses

Accounting Background a Must

In order to make the most out of Gleim’s CMA review course, it’s important that you have a background in Financial Accounting. Many candidates who did not have an accounting background had to buy more CMA self study materials to help them understand the most complicated concepts.

No CMA Assumed Knowledge Guide

Gleim does not have a CMA assumed knowledge guide to help candidates understand both simple and complex concepts at a deeper level. Using a guide of this type in your CMA exam review is even more important for those candidate who don’t have a strong background in Accounting and Finance.

Surgent CMA

Surgent CMA Review Strengths

A.S.A.P. Technology™

Surgent CMA’s trademarked adaptive learning system provides customization options to adapt test prep to your personal needs. This can be a good way to maximize time spent if you choose to self-study for the exam, which is another aspect that Surgent promotes as a pro for its course offerings.

Speed

Surgent really emphasizes that its students average fewer than 70 hours of test prep time. While some of this may be achieved with the AI software, some of it really is participant-led. In other words, if you are really serious about getting to the finish line faster, there’s no substitute for hard work.

ReadySCORE™

Another trademarked aspect of Surgent CMA’s program, ReadSCORE provides a real time test estimate. The ReadySCORE isn’t just collected from a single dry run but rather an aggregate data set that accurately estimates how you’d perform if you took the CMA exam at any point in your test prep.

Surgent CMA Review Weaknesses

No Pass Rate Data

Ambitious, disciplined students may be keen to understand the average pass rates of students who go through a certain CMA study program. Unfortunately, Surgent CMA pass rates aren’t published, so there is no way of knowing that metric when looking for the best CMA study materials.

New to the Market

Another possible con about Surgent CMA is its novelty on the market. Because it is relatively new, compared to similar programs, there is also less data about the quality of multiple choice questions or effectiveness of the much-emphasized AI technology.

Becker CMA

becker cma review logo

Course type:

Online Self-Study with Live Classes

Becker CMA Strengths

Intuitive UX

Becker CMA uses the same, streamlined interface as the Becker CPA program. This means it has already been rigorously tested and can be a user-friendly way to get started studying with a CMA online course.

Unlimited Personalized Practice Tests

Becker has a large database of multiple-choice questions, and their adaptive learning software is set up to automatically generate these based on your performance. This means endless numbers of practice tests that address the areas in which you need the most practice.

Proficiency Tracking

Key concepts and topical sections can be “mastered,” which means that you will be awarded a proficiency badge. In essence, this really just helps track the areas where your knowledge is test-ready and areas where you still need to work.

Becker CMA Weaknesses

No Pass Rate Data

Becker Pro CMA Review Course is a newer program, which means that it doesn’t have pass rate data. While they vouch for their instructor credentials and regularly updated exam review materials, there still aren’t hard facts around student success rates with this CMA online course.

No Money Back Guarantee

Many CMA review courses have a “pass or your money back” guarantee. Becker does have a pass guarantee, so, if you do not pass the CMA, you can retake their course at no extra charge. However, you won’t get your original spend back to use on a different program.

Hock CMA

Hock International CMA Review Strengths

Full Suite of Materials

Hock has a very extensive CMA learning system including live class recordings, bite-sized video lessons taught by Brian Hock, flashcards, exam simulations, assumed knowledge guide, and detailed explanations of each topic covered in the exam.

Teacher Support

With the purchase of their CMA courses, you also get access to their Teacher Support hotline. Questions about the exam simulations and content on the textbooks are answered by their representatives.

Exam Simulation

Their online exam simulation closely resembles the actual exam experience which is super beneficial in acclimating candidates to the exam format.

Hock CMA Review Weaknesses

No Money Back Guarantee

Many CMA review courses have a “pass or your money back” guarantee. Becker does guarantee that if you do not pass the CMA, you can retake their course at no extra charge. However, you won’t get your original spend back to use on a different program.

No Accountability or Coach/Counselor

Hock does not provide candidates with a one-on-one personal counselor or coach who will keep you accountable in your CMA online course like other publishers do. That being said, Hock does offer a teacher support forum to assist you with questions.

  1. Hi Nathan,
I am a very experienced finance professional, but don’t have an accounting background, reason why I am considering the CMA qualification. As I am in between jobs, I thought this to be the perfect time.. But would like to take the part 1 test in September / October, as this is when it is available in Amsterdam, where I live.
With this course, can I speed up the timing and do the whole preparation in about 10 weeks? I have a strong background in Finance Business planning and overall finance management, so I was thinking I can go through some of the modules quicker.
Please let me know your opinion.
    thanks!
    Adriana

    1. Hi Adriana,

      Thank you for your question.

We have students going through the 16-week accelerator program at a faster pace. It’s totally possible, but it comes down to your availability.

If you start now, you’ll still have enough time to complete the program within 16 weeks and take the exam at the end of October.

I’m dropping here the link to our course for all the details: https://cmaexamacademy.com/product/premium-cma-coaching-combo-part-1-part-2/

  2. What about live classes .? Are you providing live classes tooo. If yes, when it starts ? Actually I am confused about hock and cma exam academy. Hock is very affordable and also 25% discount is there.

  5. Hello Nathan,

I have live out side the united state, is there possibility to give exam in India, pakistan or UAE, because i am from Afghanistan, i think there would be no exam venue in our country, and taking USA visa will be a big obstacle to obtain for USA for a country resident of Afghanistan?

  6. Hello Nathan sir..this is Riya… I’m in first year of bachelor’s degree .i want to ask you which is the perfect time i should apply for US CMA exam …..if I go for CMA in first or in second year……then i also have to prepare for the foundation exam…

    1. Hi Riya,

I’d recommend you to first start your exam prep, and register for the exam once you’ve completed your CMA course review program.

The earlier you pass your CMA exam, the better for your career 🙂

      Thank you,
      Nathan

  7. Hi Nathan,

I am quite unsure about the process to approach the CMA course. Should I get a review / coaching course and then register with IMA (as some of my friends have suggested) or the other way around.

Could you also share your opinion about the Surgent CMA review course. How does it stand in comparison to the others mentioned above.

    Regards,
    Mahesh

    1. Hi Mahesh,

Yes that’s a good approach, and what my students at CMA Exam Academy normally do. They first enroll in my program, then within days they obtain their IMA membership.
Surgent is a good self study program with cutting edge technology. As with all the other self study course options, it’s really about the dedication and discipline of the candidate to study hard since there’s no one guiding them.

  8. Hello Nathan,

I am Master’s in commerce and have 15 plus years of experience in Finance and account domain. I am willing to do CMA; is worth doing at this stage? Kindly guide.

    Regards,

Btw i also have wiley 2018 test bank so will also use it.

Just wanted to know if doing 2015 gleim test bank will create any confusions as it is old.

    1. Hi Navjot,

Yes, the 2015 version may include some outdated questions. I recommend you to prepare from the newer test bank.

  10. Hi Nathan,

Thank you for your help. I like to study from paper text books rather than pdf format. Would you be able to send me paper text books with this $349 package? Thank you.

  12. Okay, so will the text books be sent by post or just PDF? And if I register now should I register as a student ? And if I register after my graduation can I register as student?

  13. Hi,
I’m doing my graduation final year and planning to take CMA . seems like you are really kind helping lot of people.. It would be great if you clear few doubts of mine.
Should I register for my exam directly with IMA? Are there any institutions which help me with all the formalities?
Which mode of study is better ? Regular or self study? If self then how do i get the study materials? And what about mock tests?

    1. Hi Fatema,

In my opinion, it is better to directly register for the IMA.

I’ve written an article that can help you decide on choosing between the regular and self study courses. Please check this link.

Also, the CMA Exam Academy offers an exclusive 12-week online video-based coaching program that shows you, step-by-step, what to study each week, keeps you accountable through its proven study plan, and provides you with unlimited coaching support via email so you never get stuck. You may get started using this link.

  15. Hi Nathan
I’m interested in one of your course but I have some questions related to the course, is there a way to contact you , so that I can decide which is better?

  16. Hi Nathan

I went through the link you sent me. I found that helpful, i have some questions related to the course CMA exam academy provides. Can you please give me an email or a contact detail so that I can contact you.

    Regards
    Nikita

  17. Hi Nathan
I’m planning to take a CMA course and planning to give my exams in October 2016. I have a good accounting background. I was a CA student , cleared my inter level . So I’m familiar with the concepts related to CMA subjects. I’m not able to decide what course so I take so that I can clear my exam in my first attempt. I’m planning to go for Hock courses because that is affordable as compared to Gleim. What would you suggest?

    1. Hi Nikita,

To help you with this decision, you may check my article about CMA courses using this link.

      Thanks and Regards,
      Nathan

  18. Hi Nathan,

I am employed in Dubai handling finance of group of companies. I had appeared for June 2015 window for Part-1 but couldn’t clear. Due to official reasons, I couldn’t give any windows later. Now, since 3 year period of my registration is going to end on 28-1-2017 (Started on 29-1-2014), I am preparing for Sep/Oct 2016 window to clear both part. I am doing this because, I can have one more chance in Jan 2017 window, if not cleared in Sep/Oct. I am using Wiley CMA Online Intensive Review (OIR). Seeking your valuable advise.

  19. Hi Nathan,
I have a bachelor’s degree in Commerce and Masters degree in Finance…last exam given qas in 1997.
    I worked for 4 years in budgets/MIS…quit in 2001.
Planning to start studying for CMA. What study mode do you recommend for me? Which materials would be best?
    Thanks

    1. Hi Nandini, are you able to study effectively on your own or do you feel like you need an instructor? Let me know and I’ll point you in the right direction.

  20. Hi Nathan
I am preparing for the CMA exam , I wanted to ask you as to what is a good strategy to give one part in Jan or both the parts in may . I am a working professional however I will be taking lectures from Edupristine India and using Becker’s review.

    1. Hi Irfan, I would recommend that you take 1 part per exam window. Take one part in Jan/Feb and the second part in May/June.

You can learn more about how to prepare for the exam here.

  21. Hi – i have done Bachelors in commerce from Pakistan about 10 years ago. I don’t have practical experience in accounts, so do you reckon Gleim is better for me considering my BCOM? Will appreciate your help

    KR
    Muhammad

  22. Hi Nathan,
first of all, thanks you for the article then , i want to ask you aquestion im fresh graduate and im studying wiley cma excel with lecture but my friend say the best book is hock or Gliem , im confused what choose, help me

    with best witshes

    1. Wiley is the best choice for you than Gleim or Hock. Those are for the more advanced accountant with years of experience.

  23. Hi Nathan,

I am a CA from India (CPA equivalent) and have 7 years of auditing and accounting experience with my prior jobs in a big 4 and a US based company here. I want to take up both the parts in May June window. Do you think I am being a little too ambitious with this. I am in between jobs and have one full month before I take up a new one. I can spend good amount of time studying. I plan to take gleim’s full review system for my preparation.

    Pls suggest. Thanks

    1. Kiran,

I would highly encourage you to take only one part at a time. Your chances of passing will increase.

    2. Hi Kiran,
Need you suggestion on CMA, staying in USA, from India, working in some MNC company. Could you please mail me your email id / contract number

      Thank you
      Bhushan

  24. Hi Nathan,

I live in the US, originally from the UK and just became an ACCA affiliate. Due to the overlap I was thinking of going for it and taking both CMA exams in May / June. That way I will have a US qualification also (I did not go to University so cannot do CPA).

Do you think that is too aggressive to do? I would work part time and study full-time 3 days a week. If possible what exam resources would you suggest?

    Cheers

    Paul

    1. Hi Paul,

Taking both exams in the same window is very aggressive. I would suggest to take one per window. It’s a slower process but super effective.

Probably Gleim will be a good fit for you as it sounds like you have a good accounting background.

  25. Hello Nathan you have a great blog. Just like Taz I have the same question however maybe I just need Glen´s books and Test prep since I passed the CFA level one on the first attempt and I heard both of them are overleaping.. What do you think?

    1. Hey Jose, If you have at least 5 years or more in management accounting experience, I would say Gleim is a good option for you if you plan to self-study. Otherwise consider using Wiley CMAexcel. You can get a 10% discount with Wiley by using promo code: CMACOACH.

  26. Hi Nathan, I am planning to buy Gleim study materials. They have various combinations of review system. I am confused with what to buy, only the books, the books and the essay wizard,or the complete review system that includes everything. Cost is definitely an issue as I am a student now. Please advise.

  27. Hello Nathan,

i would like to thank you at the first for your efforts and time to help us :]
then, i want to ask you about which better is, Hock or IMA?! put in mind i already studied the Cost section from Hock book, but after i have read your comments for replying, i noticed you recommend “IMA” if it won’t be “Gleim”! so, what is the difference if i keep following Hock in my study?, what i am gonna miss?
    thanks a lot

    1. Mohamed,

If you already have Hock then I would suggest to continue using it. It isn’t necessary to buy another review course.

  28. Hello Nathan,

I have a plan to register for the CMA part exam, and decided to choose the Gleim review system as a source of study since i believe that i have good basic knowledge of accounting and 1 year of experience as an external auditor at a big four firm. Assume starting from the mid of November, do you think i will have enough time to prepare to sit for the exam on February? If yes then how many hours must be covered on a weekly basis?

Thank You so much for your great contribution and experience.
    Best regards

    1. Hi Firas,

Yes that will be enough time. Study 2 to 3 hours each day and more on weekends if you can. Best of luck and I’m always here if you have any other questions.

      Nathan

  29. Hi Nathan,
Thanks for your contribution to CMA aspirants like me. I am 40 and working in a bank for the last 14 years. I am a postgraduate in Science with FRM (GARP) , PRM(PRMIA) and also CFA level 2 candidate. Though I don’t have a formal education in accounting I have developed an understanding in accounting concepts thanks to my profession and CFA preparation. I want to improve further my skills by pursuing CMA. I went through the contents and felt confident particularly in part 2. In order to confirm my suitability for CMA prepearation I also did a diagnostic quiz in Gleim in part 2 and scored 65%. I would like to complete part 2 by October 14. What would you do if you were in my position? October or Jan/Feb? I am preparted to spend 15 hours per week. Will this be sufficient to take the exam in October window?

    1. Hanish,

If I were in your shoes, I would prepare for the Jan/Feb testing window. The Oct testing window is too soon and may not give you enough time to prepare. You’ll have to rush and that’s never a good idea, especially with an exam this tough.

  30. Hello Nathan,

Is there any changes in CMA material or papaer over the last 2 years as I studied part 1 in 2013 and I have the full old matrial with me but I need online course to save my time and to assist me in studying, also if there is wepsite I go throgh it with the chat room so if I have something I dont not understand it so can be explianed through the instractor.

    1. Mohamed,

The exam changed from 4 parts to 2 parts. I’m not sure which materials you have.

The exam is also changing again in 2015. I think you are better off purchasing the 2015 edition and prepare for the Jan/Feb testing window.

Check out CMA Exam Academy. It’s my flagship online course and gives you access directly to me 🙂

  31. i want to study cma but i don’t know where should i start ?? so can anyone plz tell me and advice me >> thanks for u

    1. Hi Hakem,

I would suggest going through my CMA Exam FAQ page to get familiar with the exam. If you have any questions let me know. You can also sign up to my free 12-week email course to get direction directly from me.

  32. Well, I am having very hard time to choose between Wiley abd Gleim. I am giving myself just two months to prepare for both part. I KNOW…. that’s pretty ambitious, but that is not really my concern now. Both wiley and Gleim look interesting, but which one is actually best for me to reach my goal. I learn faster and better when I practice and I don’t reading too much. I like going straight to the point, get some understanding, then practice and master. With that said about me, which of the two books will be the most helpful.
Note: I have basic knowledge of accounting and finance.
Thank you in advance for your help to decide.

    1. Hi Bignon,

It definitely is ambitious but at the end of the day it’s a decision each one needs to make.

Regarding your question, I think the course that would fit you best is ExamMatrix or Fast Forward Academy. Both have adaptive learning test banks that challenge you based on your weak areas.

If you are looking to mainly practice and not read much, I would go for either one of them. Both are excellent choices for what you are trying to accomplish.

  33. Hi Nathan,

What review do you think is best for me? I have a degree in Accounting, a CPA, and work as a Controller so I am heavy on the accounting side. However, I have been out of school for 17 years and haven’t taken a test since! I learn best on my own and money is not a problem as my employer will most likely cover the costs. Any suggestions you have would be greatly appreciated!

    Amy

    1. Hi Amy,

Gleim came to mind right away as I read your question. Their course is well suited for candidates with a good accounting background like you do. If I were you, that’d be my choice 🙂

Let me know if you have any other questions. I’m always glad to help 🙂

      Nathan

  34. Nathan,
I have been using the Hock review, and in all fairness to them, have not been able to put the time in studying due to working full time. The last thing I feel like doing after work or even on the weekend is studying. Am I kidding myself thinking I can actually pass the CMA with little or no time to study for it ? I just took part 2 of the exam last Friday, 100 MC questions in 180 minutes. You barely have enough time to read some of the problem questions let alone spent time working on it. I know people pass all the time, however I feel the time alotted is not enough on average to fairly pass the exam. I am curious as to your thoughts.
    Thanks. Barry

    1. Hi Barry

To pass the CMA exam, it’s key to spend at least 2 to 3 hours each day studying. It’s a very rigorous exam.

TO be able to tackle the MCQ section in the exam, I would recommend that you spend a good amount of time taking mock exams. Don’t worry about speed in the beginning. That’ll come naturally. Focus on answering questions to the best of your ability. Once you get a score above 80%, then start to work on speed. It’s totally doable but it’ll require practice and commitment.

      Nathan

  35. many thanks Nathan,
what about about hock , from what I read it is good for my case -with no accounting degree -and it is cheaper.
please your feedback on this,if I can use it instead of wiley.

  36. Hi Nathan
I couldn’t get through CMA multiple choice question in two attempts (Part-1), I understood, I am not succeeding to understand the questions properly. what is your suggestion to me to pass the CMA exam
    Thank you

    1. Biju,

Are you self-studying or have you taken a live course? If you are self-studying and have not found success, I would recommend that you go to an instructor-led course to help you through the content. Check out CMA Exam Academy.

  37. Hi,

I am planning to enroll for CMA but needed a bit more clarity on whether it is better to enroll with a local vendor who provides classroom training along with the study material , exam prep papers etc or should I be better off ordering Wiley/Gleim for self study?

Please let me know which is better and which course is better in terms of quality and price.

Your feedback will help me alot! Thanks in advance.

    1. Hi Jennifer,

Do you learn better with an instructor or on your own? That’s the most important question to ask yourself.

If you prefer to learn with an instructor, then taking a class will be a better fit. But be weary of classes that last for only 1 to 2 months. Those are too short in my opinion. To adequately prepare for the CMA exam, the minimum is 3 months. How long are the classes you are considering taking?

If you prefer to self-study and look for quality and price, Gleim is the way to go. An even more affordable alternative is Fast Forward Academy. They are worth checking out. Feel free to email me directly if you have more questions. I’d be glad to help 🙂 nathan at cmacoach.com

  38. Hi Nathan,

I am planning to self-study for CMA exam .I have electrical Engineering degree.,no Accounting degree ,.I am not intending to take training ,just self study,?
what is the best course for me and is it enough alone ?

    1. Anas,

Because you will need in-depth materials, I recommend Wiley CMAexcel. Their system is great for candidates with little to no accounting background as it covers all topics in detail. Use this link and get a 10% discount when entering Wiley coupon code CM14C.

      1. many thanks Nathan,

what about about hock , from what I read it is good for my case -with no accounting degree -and it is cheaper.
please your feedback on this,if I can use it instead of wiley.

  39. hello nathan,
nathan i want to buy your study guide course, please tell me it will prove best for me to pass exams??? coz i want to appear in exam in this October?

    1. My Study Guide is a companion guide to a full review course. It provides the best exam tips and strategies, but by itself is not enough.

Check out my CMA Exam Academy. I personally train CMA candidates to prepare and pass the exam on their first attempt.

  40. Hi Nathan,

Many thanks for your kind advice.

It really helps me compare CMA review courses.

By the way, I live in Seoul, Korea and I passed CPA exam 4years ago. And now I am working in the accounting team in a korean comapny.

If you were me, which course would like you choose?

And as I am a foreigner, I feel nervous for the essay. If you have a good idea to prepare the essay, please let me know.

Thank you and have a nice day!

    1. Hi Thomas,

If I were you, I would probably go with Gleim given your CPA background. This learning system will provide you with enough information to successfully prepare for the exam, including the essay section.

  41. Hi Nathan,
I am working professional with 6 years experience and done my MBA in finance. My part 1 exam is after 30 days. I have been preparing for myself from last two months with Wiley. I have read entire theory once and also completed questions from online question bank once. However I have noticed that most of the times, its taking more than 90 seconds to arrive at correct answer. Another most important thing is I have not spent any seperate time to prepare my self for essay questions till the date. I am thinking that if I prepare well for multiple type questions & spend enough time on reading theory, it will automatically help me to prepare myself for essay answers. Everyday I get 3 hours to study. What strategy you would like to suggest me to have best use of remaining 30 days to feel my self confident about exam.

    Regards,

    Jeet

    1. Jest,

Make sure to practice mock exams more than once. Are you scoring at least 80%? Speed will come with practice. At first it’s OK to be slow. It’s normal. The more you practice, the faster you’ll become.

If you know the content very well, it will definitely help you in the essay section. Having said that, I advice you to go through some sample essay questions to understand how they are structured.

  42. Hi Nathan,

Is there anyway to find out tips for what may appear on the essay part of the May-June part 1 CMA exam?
I’m ACCA and the tutors would always provide tips for the next exam sittings but i can’t find one website that advises students where to focus their essay studies on (these ACCA tips may be correct or wrong but at least its an educated guess as to where to focus your studies).

Are the essay part of the exams random for each student or would say Budgeting appear on the essay part for all May – June exams and then say variances appear in the next sitting?

Will the essays contain variances and budgeting and costing etc? or just focus mainly on area of the syllabus?

Any advice you can give would be appreciated as I understand the syllabus quite well from my ACCA days but am trying to find more info on the exam and can’t seem to find any definitive information anywhere on IMA’s website.

    1. Hi Gary,

Those are very good questions. Unfortunately, I’m in the dark as much as you are. The ICMA doesn’t publish anything related to the content that will appear on the exam on a per test window basis. That would help for sure.

Assume that any topic can appear on the essay portion of the exam. To give you somewhat of an idea download the files found on this page and get a feel for the type of questions you may get asked.

My advice to candidates is to know all topics at an expert level. That’s what I had to do and there were no surprises on exam day.

      Does this help?

    1. Hi Zachary,

The prices are still the same as on my site: $665 for the full system. Are you seeing a different price?

The only system that is for around $400 is from Fast Forward Academy. They are new in the CMA space but worth checking out based on your budget.

  43. HI Sir,

I want to study cma. I need a guidance from you. Can we get online package study material and guidance for coaching in us cma? I want to know the course fee. How can you guide me? Awaiting for your reply.
    Thanks and regards.
    ANJANI SWETHA.

    P.S : My contact number 9494908328.

  44. Hi Nathan,
Thanks for your explanatory answers for the candidates questions, which intern helped me a lot in different scenario.
I have recently registered myself with Morgan international for CMA course with class room training
I would appreciate if you could suggest me for the following:
1.Do you have any idea about this institute? as my induction is going to start this wed 26th Feb’14
2.As you mentioned in one of your answer above that you have attended the classes but apparanty which doesn’t turn in satisfactory result, so you did a self study to complete. I felt taking class for the preparation of CMA, i have a gap of 7 years from the books; I have Bachelor in BBM + MBA. The content which has seen in the Part 1 and Part 2 which are more similar what I studied in past classes. What I felt is that if I attend the class room training we will be able to get many ideas from the tutor as how to attend each questions and techniques of answering. Do you suggest class room training is best for the candidate who is having a gap of 7 years from the study?

    Regards
    Javed

    1. Javed,

I’m not familiar with Morgan International’s program or effectiveness in preparing CMA candidates.

As far as taking classes, I didn’t have a good experience. That’s why I didn’t pursue my CMA credential during that time until years later.

Because you have a 7 year gap, perhaps a classroom setting may be quite helpful. You’ll have an instructor readily available and will help you understand the concepts in the exam.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

      Nathan

  45. Hi Nathan,

1/ I like Gleim review materials a lot but I am out of school for so long (over 10+ years) thus I think I need more in-dept explanation. I learn better than reading explanation. Do you think Wiley fits me better (English is not my first language)?

2/ If I spend 21 hours a week to study & practice (seriously 3-hour study a day), how long do you think I am able to sit for a CMA part 1?

Please advise. I appreciate it so much!

    1. Hi Ctydream,

The new Wiley CMAexcel course is really good and it comes with flashcards. If you need more in-depth explanations I would purchase that learning system. Use coupon code CM14C to receive a 10% discount.

If you study 3 hours each day and score at least 80% in your practice exams, I think you could be ready in 3 months. But it all depends on how you study and your overall performance in the practice exams. Best of luck 🙂

  46. Dear Nathan.
Hope you are doing well. It is nice to see you are sparing your time to answer the querries.
In my case , I am an accountant in one of the reknown Big 4 . I appeared one time for CMA Part 1.
I have attended the CMA tuition classes almost two month twice a week for 4 hours/session. I did well during my classess by preparing through Gleim and Ima material. But when I attended the exam I felt every thing new novel . Nothing were matching and in simple way I am not getting the concept or one can say i was not understanding the questions. I felt in later case might be my instructor did dealt knowledge with us which failed me to understand the question in center.

Could you please let me know what is the reason I could not even understand . question were not looking in the way of gleim.

    REgards

    1. Hi Khan,

In your class, did you guys do mock exams? Going over the material is good for learning the concepts but it’s equally important to practice using retired MCQs. If you guys didn’t do mock exams, I would recommend that you purchase a test bank from Gleim or Wiley CMAexcel and practice until you score at least 80% in each section. If you purchase Wiley, use coupon code CM14C for a 10% discount.

  47. Dear Nathan,
i am planning to do the cma. Can you give me some suggestion. i am planning to do the exam of part 1 & part 2 in May & june, i have also some experience & knowledge of accounting and finance.
Is it possible to pass the exam in only one attempt ?, , which books and material is best for me? if i purchased the Gleim Review course which have total cost 698 $, it is sufficient for me to pass the exam of both part in the May & June attempt , if is study regularly 6 hour daily. can i also avail the guarantee package.

    Thanks

    1. Saleem,

Yes, it’s possible to pass the exam with one attempt. I did 🙂

Gleim is a great course and will be enough to help you prepare for the exam.

  48. Hi Nathan

I want to thank you for your advice to all requester and need your help to tell me
the steps to study CMA , I finished my part 1 course but actually i don’t know the way of studding and which book I have to follow IMA or Gleim

  49. I’ve been considering taking the CMA exam. I was studying for the CPA exam but after careful consideration I feel CMA is more in line with my career goals. I’ve been reviewing the previous posts and was wondering if anyone has had success with finding employment with the CMA?
    Thanks in Advance.

  50. hi Nathan
which you recommend purchasing Gleim or Wiley new or used ?? Also which one of the two do you prefer.

    thank you

    1. Hi Junior,

Gleim is great if you have an accounting background. If you don’t have one, Wiley would be the choice.

  51. Hi Nathan, I am planning to take my CMA very soon… The Questions is: Do I need to attend any courses for that or the self-study tools are just enough? Given that I did my bachelors in Management and Economics…

    Thanks,
    Abdulmuhsen

    1. Hi Abdulmuhsen,

How do you learn best? on your own or with an instructor? If the latter, I would recommend that you take a live class. If the former, a self-study course such as Gleim would be fine.

  52. Don’t by ExamMatrix. Their material is so outdated except the format (becase the format CMA’s exam remains the same).

    Go Gleim or Wiley.

  53. hey nathan ,
what is the best CMA course to study if i have already have a background of accountimg , business , economics . math and statistics ? is it hock , gleim or wiley ? i already have the hock course , and how long will it take to study the course and prepare for the exam ?
    thanks in advance

    1. If you already have Hock, I would just go with that. Purchasing another review course will be unnecessary. But if you would still like to purchase a course, I would go with Gleim CMA.

  54. Hi Nathan,
I am a college Senior and wants to try out for the CMA in January February . I would like to attempt part one that time can i pass the exam with just by a review book and are they such think out there just a review book out there for me to study? I am pretty good in accounting my over all average for my major is A- If that is any help, in you making a suggestion on books. bytheway, i am trying not to spend money on a expensive review course because my first intention is the Cpa but a rep came by to my school and convince me to take the exam. thanks in advance any info will be helpful.

    1. Hi Ornell,

If you want to take the exam in the next testing window, I would advice you to go for February, not January. It’ll give you enough time to study.

Since you are good in accounting, I would recommend Gleim for you. I think the content is a perfect fit to your skill level.

  55. Hi nathan, i am started my cma just 2 months ago i have just read ethics and internal controls hock , but after the detail learning of these sections i cant get the satisfactory resultbets , i cant understand what is asked in the question ………………… give me the guidence for better leaning or understanding of the text, so i attempt the questions in better way……….. Thanks usman

    1. Usman,

For questions specifically about the Hock material, I would advice you to reach out to them. They are in a better position to help you with it since they published it. The internal controls and ethics portion are text driven. How about studying sections with calculations first? That may help you get started on the right foot.

  56. Hi Nathan
I send you big thank for helping people to meet thier goal.
I am accountant. I am planning to study cma. I have some concerns. I will be happy to help me.
How can I start to study cma if I have some weak in accounting? What is the best way to pass cma from first time? What is the best source to pass cma?
    Best regards

    1. Hello,

You are very welcome. I’m very glad to help candidates pass the exam on their first try.

Gleim is a very good review course. What is also great about it in your case is that they’ll assign a personal counselor with the purchase of the course. This means that if you have questions about any topic, you can reach out to them, and your counselor will help you understand it. Redeem a 10% discount if you are interested in purchasing this course.

Practice mock questions until you score at least 80% or higher. Best of luck!

  57. Hi Nathan,

First of all, thanks for taking time to respond to all the queries.

I am planning to take up CMA. I meed your suggestions and input for my preparation. I have not finalized when I would take up the exams, but would want to start my preparations ASAP.

I am a working professional and need to make the best use of available time for my preparation. I am from India and want to know how to proceed with preparation.

Should I take up the Gleim Review or Wiley review or IPFC in India providing CMA preparation course. Keeping in mind my geographical location, I want to know which is the most effective package.

    1. Hi Kiran,

Gleim has proven to be one of the most effective review courses regardless of where the candidate lives. I think you will do just fine with Gleim. Redeem a 10% discount by using this link.

  58. Hi Nathan,

I’m having a hard time choosing between Gleim and Wiley. I’m leaning more towards Gleim, however, I’m not sure how strong of an accounting background is necessary to understand the material.

    Thank you!
    Maria

    1. Maria,

Gleim’s material is very extensive, and although you may not understand all the topics, they will assign a personal counselor to you that will help you along the way. I highly recommend Gleim.

  59. Hello Mr. Nathan,

I m looking forward for CMA part 1 exam. I almost complete all practice Question of both Hock & Gleim. But still I m very nervous because this is my first international level exam. So please guide me any think more i need to do to pass exam in one attempt.

    1. Hello Shaikh,

If you are scoring at least 80% on your practices tests then I think you’ll do just fine. If you are not, focus on the weak areas to bring up your score.

  60. Hello Mr. Nathan ,
I am planning to appear in CMA exam in feb 2014. Is it fine to do preparation from home with hock review material without join any classroom training for CMA.

    Regards,
    Himanshu

    1. Hi Himanshu,

If you are more comfortable studying on your own, that’s totally fine. That’s what I did. I tried taking a class but it went so fast that I didn’t learn anything. When I studied on my own, I was able to actually learn.

I would highly recommend that you purchase Gleim review course. You will get a personal counselor that can help you throughout your studies. It will come in handy when you have questions or feel stuck in a section.

    1. Bakre,

It really depends on the learning style of a candidate and their accounting background. But for me, if I had to pick, I would choose Gleim.

  61. I have just started CMA and my plan is to attempt the exams in the month of Sep 2013. I want to study through MCQs with detail answer so please guide me which CMA course is better where I can see a lot of MCQs with detail answer (Gleim, Hock or Wiley)

    1. Ali,

All three have an extensive database of MCQs, but Hock and Wiley have in-depth explanations of each question.

  62. hi nathan
i need your help -i failed in my first attempt in part one at feb 2012 and i will get anther one in june 2013.they send me letter and my weakness in all parties but ethics is excellent.and essay is very bad . i studied from hock i reed the book and answer all questions in test prep from hock and gleim and i will practices on the essay questions and i will read the questions retired ..what should be i do and what you recommended me about the way of study and the way to exam to success..thanks

    1. Hi Hany,

I’m so sorry to hear that you did not pass the exam. Don’t lose hope. With a little more studying and practice, you will pass and earn the CMA credential. I’m here to help you along the way.

One thing to consider when taking the mock exams is that at some point you’ll start running into the same questions over and over. By memory you will already know the answer, so you will pick the correct answer and think you know the material well. I say this because it happened to me and it’s a very easy trap to fall into. Have you run into this?

A studying technique that I heavily used was SQ3R. I highly recommend it for you as it will help you remember at least 80% of what you study. Try to use it and let me know how it goes. Best of luck Hany!

  63. Nathan , How are you ? I need your help . I Failed in cma part one exam in two attempts . i cant know the reason . i studied from hock text book and gliem cd test prep. im very slow in answering the essays topic….. i need any new retired ima question and any sources that help me to pass exam the next attemt…..
    thanks alot
    khaled / egypt

    1. Hi Khaled,

I’m so sorry to hear that you didn’t pass the exam twice. When candidates don’t pass, the IMA sends them a letter with a report card showing the areas they need to work on. Did you not get this letter? If you didn’t, I would ask you to contact the IMA and ask them for the letter for both times that you took the exam. It’s free by the way.

I found retired essay questions online and would like to share them with you. Please click HERE and it’ll take you to the article. Keep me posted on your progress, and best of luck.

  64. how r u nathan i want help me in cma exam essay questions

    1. Hi Mohamed,

Have you taken mock exams? That’s one of the best ways to familiarize yourself with the exam format and test your knowledge of the subject matter. Your exam is approaching, and I truly wish that you will pass on your first time.

      1. Hi
I already have CMA profile as I paid membership for three countinues years and failed twice.

I want to give a last try from your side.

        Please help me.
