      Hi Khalid,

      ACCA would give you a solid foundation in accounting principles and is useful for audits and tax practices. With the CMA, on the other hand, you’ll have the skill set to make financial decisions for a company and hold management accounting or executive positions. CMAs tend to have higher salaries.
      Another advantage of the CMA is that it’s a globally recognized certification, while the ACCA is mostly recognized in the UK and commonwealth countries.

    I’m currently back in school to fulfill the required accounting education credits to sit for the CPA exam. I’m thinking long term here — is there any benefit to obtaining a CPA license first, working public accounting for a few years, then obtaining a CMA later on when I decide to work for a private company?       My suggestion is to go for the designation that suits your career goals best.

      If you’d like to work in management accounting, then the CMA is a great certification to help you achieve that goal.

    Hi,

    Is it compulsory that complete CMA in 3 year.
    Our tutor doesn’t even complete Part 1 and 2 .

      It’s best to focus on the CMA during your last year in college, not before.

      According to the CMA Handbook: “If both exam parts are not successfully completed within three years of entering the certification program, any passed part will expire, and the CMA entrance fee will have to be repaid.”

    I have done 10+2 from the arts stream in 2013 & I did not complete my graduation, but I have completed diploma in accounts & tally & now also working as an accounts assistant. can I do CMA without complete graduation?

      The CMA certification requires you to have a bachelor’s degree that comes from a regionally accredited or Distancing Education Accrediting Commission (DEAC) accredited university or college.

      Please note that you can submit the educational requirement to IMA either prior to taking the exam or no later than 7 years after passing both parts of the CMA exam.

      It is possible to study for the CMA exam while doing your bachelor’s degree.

      It’s best to focus on the CMA during your last year in college, not before. The exams are hard, and since you have to pass the 2 parts within 3 years from the enrollment date, it’s best to make sure you’ll have enough time to focus on the CMA.

      More than looking at age, look at the number of years you plan to stay in the workforce.
      Passing the CMA exam takes about 6 to 9 months. Assuming all other requirements are already met, how many more years do you plan to work?

      The best way to assess your exam readiness is through practice exams. If your test bank offers exam simulations, I recommend practicing on them until you consistently score 86% or above on them. That’s when you’ll know you’re ready for your real exam.

      My advice is to practice a lot on mock exams and aim to score above 85% on each section AND on the full mock exam. This will be a good indicator that you’re prepared for the exam.

      Also, make sure that you fully understand the logic behind each answer; and don’t forget to practice on your speed and memorize all formulas to be able to recall them quickly, so you can comfortably answer to all 100 MCQs within the allotted 3 hours on your exam day.

      You can actually take the exam even if you haven’t completed your degree yet. As a student, you’ll get substantial discounts on your exam fees and the IMA membership. As for the education and experience requirement, you can fulfill them within 7 years after passing the exam.

      The knowledge you’ll gain while studying for the exam will help you land a good job and will get into management accounting faster.

      Hey Jishnudas – I know the exam may seem scary and the anxiety may even interfere with your ability to study and memorize new formulas and concepts. But I encourage you to try to adopt a positive attitude – it’s the key to keeping you motivated to study when you know that you CAN do this and you WILL pass the exam. Make a study plan and divide it into small steps that you feel you can complete – following it will make you feel more confident and by the time you complete it, you’ll feel prepared for your exam and ready to crush it.

      If you feel you need more help with your studies, consider enrolling in a coaching course.

      As for the essays, the difficulty may vary: some candidates get really easy essay questions, while others may get complex essay questions that require a lot of calculations. If you don’t have a test bank, I recommend you to acquire one to help you become more familiar with the exam format and practice on retired CMA exam multiple-choice questions and essay questions. It’s a super important study tool!

    Im currently working in QATAR and going to start CMA US. but I have a small confusion as why you recommend only the US CMA.

    1.) Lot of countries have their own CMA and it helps only withing their countries. and why only US CMA has this wide recognition in the world..?
    2.) What are exemption i will get in ACCA , If i complete CMA US.?

      CMA US is the gold standard in Management accounting, it is highly respected and recognized by businesses and organizations in most countries and even in the countries that have their own CMA certification.

      Passing the CMA exam will exempt you from the following papers:
      F1 Accountant in Business
      F2 Management Accounting
      F3 Financial Accounting

      If you have a test bank, practice a lot on mock exams. Make sure your score is above 80%. Once each section is above 80%, start taking full mock exams of 100 questions each until your score is above 80% as well.

      Also make sure you’ve memorized all formulas – you may practice writing them down by heart and fast repeatedly until you can recall them quickly.

    Thank God I found this page. My name’s Von and I’m working as an accountant for a new firm in the UAE. This is my first time to work as a full time accountant involving end to end accounting process, budgeting, decision making, etc. And that was what led me to want to learn management accounting more. I’ve done my research and tumbled upon a number of certifications such as CIMA, ACCA, CFA, CMA, and others. I was particularly interested at CIMA and CMA and actually torn between the two. But a mentor has told me that it’s better to take CMA because it will not take longer than CIMA. And CMA is most suitable for people with bachelor’s degree and more relevant in the UAE. Anyway, after much thought, i have decided to go for CMA. However due to budget constraint, I wouldnt be able to enroll in an exam preparation center.       Hi Abu, I’m not familiar with immigration statistics for those holding the CMA designation. But if you plan on migrating to the USA, having the CMA designation will put you in a better position to land good jobs vs those who are not certified. I hope this helps.

      You need at least 15 hours per week for 3 months to prepare for the exam. If you can do 20 hours per week even better.

    I have joined IMA last year and i am working as a Management Account for the past 5 years in England. My issue is working full time and studying towards CMA. I plan to take Either Part 1 or 2 in October 15. But i have nothing in terms of study and is now keen to get this going. Which one would you suggest me taking first – part 1 or 2?       Hi Raj, you need at least 3 months to prepare for each part. If you have experience in manufacturing then take Part 1 first, otherwise Part 2. I have an online program that will walk you step by step through the entire process.

      You need 2 consecutive years working in financial management or management accounting to fulfill the work experience requirement. But if you want to be 100% sure if your experience qualifies, please contact the IMA directly. They will be able to provide you with clear answers.

      Hi Saif, 4 hours per day is great actually. It’s definitely possible to work full-time and also study for the exam. That’s what I did and most candidates do too.

      Shabbir, I always recommend to take one part per exam window.

      The exam pass rate is so low that taking two together will decrease your chances even more.

    Hi Nathan, I have been out of school since 1998. I have progressed through the “ranks” and have been a Controller since 2006 for various hospitals in my company. I’m ready to take my career to the next level and I believe the CMA can help me. I’m afraid I’m very rusty with certain concepts though. What do you recommend for someone like me to pass the exam on my first try? My goal is to pass it within a year from now.
