Best CMA Study Books

The CMA is a large test that covers a lot of high-level concepts, sometimes in detail. To adequately cover all topic areas, a CMA textbook is key. Here are some important factors to consider when you look to find a CMA textbook online to buy:

  • Be sure you get CMA Part 1 and Part 2. These will often be published separately.
  • Read about the author and publishing company. Be sure they are reputable and have the right expertise.
  • Check out preview versions or pages to be sure you like the way the textbook is laid out and delivers information.
  • See if there are both print and digital versions.

A CMA study book is going to go a long way in helping you master the material.

Best CMA Test Banks

The CMA exam has two types of questions:

  • Multiple choice questions
  • Essays

Each section of the CMA will have 100 multiple choice questions and two essays. The Institution of Management Accountants (IMA) regularly issues new questions for the CMA. A handout with a limited number of questions from previous years are available once a candidate becomes an IMA member.

Of course, these aren’t enough to prepare for the exam. Instead, you can buy CMA test banks, usually included with a CMA review course. As long as they are real, authentic questions from previous CMA exams, they will be immensely helpful for practice.

Be sure to include an extensive test bank in your CMA study materials that covers both parts one and two of the exam.

Free CMA Exam Study Guide

The questions on the CMA exam are complex and require critical thinking. Because of this, good CMA review courses will provide answer explanations, formulas and guides. These three kinds of study tools will help you understand why questions should be answered in a certain way. This boosts your foundational knowledge and gives you a leg up on subject mastery.

Having an additional guide to help plan your study sessions and test prep will make sure you achieve the best possible results from your study material.

Best Calculator for the CMA Exam

The last tool you’ll need to pass the CMA exam is a calculator. There are certain calculators that are approved for use in the CMA exam. It is super important that you follow the CMA exam calculator rules so yours isn’t banned.

You can refer to the IMA CMA Handbook for details, but the basic guidelines are as follows:

  • Must be small battery or solar powered and electronic
  • Can only perform six functions
    • Addition
    • Subtraction
    • Multiplication
    • Division
    • Square root
    • Percentage
  • Must not be programmable
  • Must not use any type of tape

Get this Texas Instruments calculator from Amazon for a reliable, easy to use, IMA-compliant option.

So, that’s it. Those are the basic study tools that are going to help you pass the CMA exam. Have questions? If you still wonder about which CMA study materials you really need, drop me a comment below!

  1. Dear Sir
To appear for CMA exam,is it mandatory to undergo coaching from an institute ?

if you are a self studying learner, does the IMA institute put a stop for appearing the CMA Exams ?

    Being a professional coach,kindly clarify.

    V.Praga

    1. Not at all. It’s completely fine to self-study for your exam if you feel you don’t need the coaching. The essential study tools you’ll need are CMA review textbooks and a test bank to practice on exam simulations.

Please reach out if you have any other questions 🙂

      Thanks,
      Nathan

  2. Hi NATHAN ,

I am an ACCA member and would like to know how many exams will I have to write to get a CMA certification.

  3. Hi Nathan,

I am an Engineer mostly worked on Engineering design though I did not have any accounting background.

Now I am planning to take up financial certification compared CMA concluded CMA would be the best choice which covers management accounting. I am confused with the Institute choice(Gleim, Wiley, CMA Exam Academy), please suggest me, Thank you.

    1. Hi Kedar,

I understand that there are many choices to prepare for the CMA exam. It comes down to your learning style. If you are more of a self-started who doesn’t procrastinate and can figure things out on your own, I think any of the self-study courses ie Gleim, Wiley, Hock, are good options for you.

If you need a coach and study structure course that mimics a classroom setting but online, CMA Exam Academy will be a better fit.

      Thanks,
      Nathan

  4. HI Nathan,

I’m going to take CMA Part 1 Exam on September 2018 term. Actually, I am Graduation person in Accounts and having 5 years experience in Accounting matters(Mid Level only). Should I clear in first attempt?. Because, I took Wiley CMA review course, while reviewing the material I’m getting 100% confidence, but when taking the pratice exams, my confidence levels are down. I’ studying July first week on wards, Should I get more practice? or Do you suggest anything?

    1. Hi Bhaskar,

The scores you get when practicing on MCQs are the best indicator of how prepared you are for the exam.

Aim to score above 85% on each section AND on the practice exam, and make sure you’re not just remembering the correct answers, but also fully understand the logic behind them.

If you need coaching support to help you with all your questions, check out my video coaching course here. It’s designed to supplement a regular self-study course with unlimited 1-on-1 support, in-depth video lectures and a weekly step-by-step study plan.

    1. Hi Krishna,

Here’s the list of IMA fees you’ll need to pay to sit for the exam:
      1. IMA Membership: $230/year or $39/year if you’re a student – it’s an annual payment.
      2. CMA entrance fee: $250 ($188 for students). Note that from the day you enter into the program you’ll have 3 years to clear both parts of the CMA exam. It’s a one-time payment.
      3. Registration fee for one part of the CMA exam: $415/part.

And here’s the coaching course which includes everything you need to prepare for the exam and pass it on your first try.

  6. Hi Nathan

Considering the different prep providers to choose from – which additional material does one have to cover to pass the CMA exam or would the material provided suffice to pass the exam?

    Regards

    Werner

    1. Hi Werner,

The material provided by prep courses covers all topics tested in the exam and is usually sufficient to pass the exam.

However, for candidates who do not have an extensive accounting background, I recommend my coaching course which is designed for accountants at all levels.

  7. Hi Nathan,

I am an Oracle ERP consultant mostly worked on Financial modules though I did not have any accounting background I learned basics on the job.

Now I am planning to take up financial certification compared CPA, CFA, CMA concluded CMA would be the best choice which covers management accounting. I am confused with the Institute choice(Gleim, Wiley, CMA Exam Academy), please suggest me, Thank you.

  8. Hi Nathan,

I am really appreciated the free advice you are providing us. I am currently doing the final ACCA exam paper (14 Exams) and I was recently rewarded Oxford Brookes Bs Degree in accounting. I am planning to travel to USA within 2 or 3 months and I heard that I can not get good accounting or finance job unless I get US qualifications, so I decided to do CMA. What materials are you advising me given I am ACCA with relevent one year experiance.

I will keep in touch with you

  9. Hi Nathan,

I work 7 hours in 6 days a week plus 4 hours for the transportation and all that’s left of my hours in a day is divided for studying, sleeping and me time. I barely have 20 days left for my scheduled exam of Part 1 of which I have covered 10% only yet in preparation.

Honestly, I’m cramming right now, though I try not to and focus instead in preparing and studying. Financial wise, do you think I should rather postponed my exam schedule? Or give it a best try?

Oh, I am to study everyday at least 5-6 hours by the way. I’m studying with Gleim at the moment.

    1. Hi Diva,

Sorry to hear that you have so little time to prepare for the exam. Unfortunately, appointments cannot be rescheduled to another testing window, so you may as well appear for the exam and do your best.

      Good luck!

    1. Hi Sanjeev,

Yes, you are eligible for the CMA exam, however in order to become certified you’ll also need to fulfill the experience requirement. You can learn about it here.

      Best of luck!

  10. Hi Nathan,

This is a great website for people who are considering taking the CMA exam and thank you for providing us the information.
I am a CPA and working in a public accounting firm as an auditor. After the busy season, I have some free time and considering taking the CMA exam to enhance my career. I didn’t have any good luck with Glem and Wiley when I was studying the CPA exam, but I have never heard of Hock. According to your review, Hock seems like have too much information. My BBA and Master’s degree are both in accounting. Do you think Gleim would be a good fit for me?

    Thank you,
    Vanessa

    1. Hi Vanessa,

Thank you for visiting my blog!

Yes, I think Gleim is a good fit because of your extensive experience. You may also check my course if you’re interested. Either one will work great for you.

If you have any further questions, please let me know.

      Thanks!

  11. Hi Nathan,

I am working as SAP Finance consultant with 6 + years of experience and done my graduation and Indian ICWA Inter. I am planning to do the US CMA course. Please let me know the Process and complete details.

    Regards,
    Sasidhar

  12. Nathan,

My background/experience is much like Dave’s above; I have an MBA in Accounting, but most of my professional experience has been in Finance (primarily public sector). Based on your reviews and my personal assessment, I believe either your course or the Wiley course would be a good fit.

I’m leaning toward you course. Does your course offer any flashcard references as does the Wiley course, and can you “sell” me why you course might be a better option of the two?

    Many thanks in advance,

    Tom

    1. Hi Tom,

Please check this link for a detailed comparison of the CMA courses (CMA Exam Academy, Hock, Wiley and Gleim).

      Thanks and Regards,
      Nathan

      Thanks,
      Nathan

  15. Hi Nathan,

Hope you are doing great! I have a non accounting background and I am an IT Auditor. I wanted to pursue a accounting degree and was looking into CMA. I also looked into the CIA certification as it is inline with what I am doing currently. I had couple of questions, it will be great if you can answer them so that I can make a decision as to which of your course to choose:
    a. Does it make sense to obtain both certification? I am biased and they both look good in terms of career progression but I have so much time!
    b. Does CMA and CIA have overlapping content? Meaning, If I study for CMA, is it going to help me prepare to certain extent for CIA as well? (Obviously, I haven’t looked into the course in detail)
    c. What exact materials should I be referring to apart from your study guides. I don’t want to have two many books arouund and be confused!

    Thanks
    Sam

    1. Hi Sam,

      Please see responses below:
      a. Taking both the CMA and the CIA will definitely give you a professional edge. If you need to choose, you may want to read my article on this topic “CMA vs CIA – Which is Right for You“.
      b. Yes, they have an overlapping content. The CMA exam covers Internal Controls in Part 1 and Risk Management in Part 2 while the CIA covers Financial Management (Financial Accounting and Managerial Accounting) in Part III of the exam.
      c. Our course offering is complete. We have unlimited one-on-one coaching, weekly accountability reports and more. Our latest innovation is our online interactive textbook which provides you with LOS-based reading material, valuable tips and tricks, online quizzes and videos in just a click of your fingertip. To know more about our course, please click this link.

  18. Hello Nathan, thank you for sharing such valuable info. I am interested in making myself more marketable, & seriously contemplating the CMA. Have been out of college 25 years, currently a plant controller, have received news of plant closing in 2017. Took sample questions, & was totally lost, as have not worked with Cash Flow statements since college, nor other areas of balance sheet side. Time an issue, as job is demanding. Any recommendations on how I may best suceed at CMA?Also, is a basic laptop recommended rather than Android tablet for the prep courses? Thank you,

    1. Hi Dana, Thanks for posting this comment here but I believe we got it all sorted out via email 🙂 Thanks

  19. Hi Nathan!

I’m from the Philippines and want to be a CMA. I would like to ask what would be the process as well as to the review. My main concern is about the fees because I see this as a major investment and would entail large amount of cost outlay.

I’m hoping that you could help me regarding this matter. Thank you in advance.

    1. Hi Rommel,

It’s great to hear from more people in the Philippines. The CMA designation is becoming well known in that country 🙂

  20. Hi Nathan,

1.What is the difference and additional benefit’s between enrollment in CMA Exam Academy and purchase of CMA Complete Course ?

    2. Pursuing the CMA USA , what is the scope if I intend to shift to Australia in a couple of years.

    1. Hi Suraj,

The added benefit of CMA Exam Academy is that the program has a step-by-step study plan and also that it provides all the material and tools needed to effectively study for the exam. As an experienced CMA Coach, I’ve created a program that addresses candidates needs and provides the attention from a dedicated coach (me) until you pass the exam.

  21. I completed b.com in September 2015. I will do the MBA in August 2016. I want register for membership in April 2016. can I eligible for student category

  22. what is the cost of the Ebook and

what does the ebook contain, like does it have the whole syllabus covered as per Gleim, am finding gleims book difficult or time consuming as there are lots of data that I find is extra or the course I attended in class is not the same as per the glems book, hence am confused

does the Ebook consist also of a question bank

    1. Hi, open enrollment will begin in a few weeks. I saw that you reserved your spot already so you’ll be getting an email from me very soon 🙂

  23. If I decide to go w/ the CMA Exam Academy/instructor led route, will i still be able to access the video related content that Wiley offers? I registered for a 14 free trial to research their content and really like the video lectures they provide.

    Dave

    1. Dave,

The Videos is the only product that I do not incorporate into my academy due to the ones I created. Their videos are for a specific number of topics, whereas the academy has videos for every single topic.

Their videos are great but if you are looking for lectures in every topic, those may not be the best fit.

    2. Hi Dave,

The offering over at CMA Exam Academy does not include Wiley’s videos. If you really like their videos and want to go with them it’s totally fine. Be aware that their videos only cover a certain number of topics. Use promo code CMACOACH to save 10%.

  24. I have an MBA and working Finance but my accounting background is a weakness. I understand the basics but am having a hard time choosing which test prep to use. I understand Gleim and Wiley are the best and even have Part 1 of th Gleim review material. At times, I find the content and answer explanations inadequate. What does the Wiley test prep offer over and above the Gleim test prep that would ensure I understand the mat’l to pass the test?

    Dave

    1. Dave,

Gleim is an excellent review course but is geared for candidates with solid accounting experience. In your case, I would go with Wiley because their content is more in-depth and better covered. Use the links above and get a 10% discount on your order.

Let me know if you have any other questions. Nathan

  25. Dear Sir,

I’m trying to do my CMA exam this jun I have BSc in Accounting and i work as an accountant, Could you help me in deciding the right study material please ?

    thank you

    1. BadrEldin,

If you have less than 5 years experience in the field, I would choose Wiley. Otherwise go with Gleim. Use the links above to get a 10% discount in your order.

  26. Dear Mr. Nathan,

    Good Day…

i would like to ask you which CMA study material is better. in market so many brand are coming like HOCK, IMA RIGO’s etc ….. kindly advise which will be easier to understand. which one material is proving good knowledge for the exam preparation.

    1. Hi Puneet,

Great question. I believe many have this question as well. The top two courses is Gleim and Wiley.

The exam is hard to pass but with the adequate preparation, you can too.

    b) Entrance Fee $120 $75
    c) Processing Fee $15 $0
    d) Exam Part1 $197.50 $125
    e) Exam Part2 $197.50 $125

Also, that private trainer told that i can avail this promos if i join that private training and make the payment to them. But i prefer not to pay the IMA fees to a 3rd party, however i prefer to make the payment to IMA direclty using my credit card. So can you kindly let me know how to avail this promo offer directly from IMA website.

Your earliest response on this will be appreciated.

    1. Manor,

I can’t speak for the private trainer, but if you prefer to pay the IMA directly by all means do so. In my online Academy, I ask my students to pay the IMA directly as to prevent any confusion with membership and/or fees.

  31. Nathan,

I was trying to purchase your study guide. I am having difficulties as there is an error message stating that there is something wrong with the merchant configuration, when paying via credit card. Is it currently down?

    1. Hi Terrence,

It seems to be working now. Would you mind trying again? Sorry for the inconvenience.

  32. Hi, Nathan,

About matching between textbook material & vedeo lectures,
as I browse the Acdemy CMA contents, the L. systems are Wiley or Glim,
if I experienced with Hock L. System, is this led to iteruption?

    Thank yuo,

    1. Abdalla,

You can use any system with the Academy. The order of topics may not be presented in the same order as in the textbook you use, but if you follow based on topics everything will be covered.

  35. Hi Nathan,

I just recently finished my B.S. in Accounting (graduated in May, the day after my 36th birthday) and originally wanted to sit for the CPA exam. I have since decided that the CMA would be a better fit for me and my interests. Over the past few years, I have worked my way up to Controller for a smaller manufacturing company (45-50 employees). I can’t quit my job to get the public accounting experience, plus the possibility of doing taxes or audits every day doesn’t really appeal to me. I enjoy my role now, but want to be able to grow to the CFO position one day.

My question is about study materials. I have the Gleim materials, but they are for the four part test (I believe they say eight edition and they are green). Is it possible to use these to study for the 2 part exam? If so, which parts, if any, combine together? Would there be any material that is needed, but was not included in the 4 part exam?

Thank you for any help that you can provide.

    1. Robbie,

I took the two-part exam so I’m not intimately familiar with the 4-part exam that was discontinued a while back.

I would highly recommend that you purchase Gleim’s two-part learning system as it’ll guarantee that you’ll invest your time in the topics that matter. Some content of the 4-part exam was removed altogether from the current 2-part exam.

Preparing for the exam takes effort and dedication. If I were you, I’d want to make sure my time and effort is invested in the appropriate content.

I hope that was helpful. Let me know if you have any other questions. I’m always glad to help 🙂

I am a CA and wanted to pursue CMA but would like your advice whether it is possible to crack CMA exams along with job or does it require full 6 month dedication.

    1. Hi Neha,

Yes totally. I prepared for the exam while working full-time. It’s more challenging but if I could do it, you can totally do it too 🙂

    1. The one mentioned above in the toolkit is the one I used for the exam. I really like it and highly recommend it.

    1. Ahmed,

My study guide is an excellent companion guide to any learning system. You will find tips and techniques not found in any other textbook. These were drawn from my personal experience and helped me pass on my first try.

Gleim or Wiley’s test banks are excellent sources of retired CMA exam questions. If you purchase Wiley’s, use coupon code CM14C during checkout to redeem a 10% discount.
