ACCA vs CMA – Which Is the Right One for You?

acca vc cma

It’s no secret that there are plenty of accounting certifications available for you to choose from. The problem is finding one that’s best suited for you and where you want your career to go.

I love sharing these comparisons with you because although I chose to become a CMA, it is not for everyone. So today I wanted to break down the differences between the ACCA vs CMA.

What is the ACCA?

First and foremost, ACCA stands for Association of Chartered Certified Accountants. The ACCA is based in the United Kingdom and operates a single entity just like the CMA. Due to the fact that is based in the UK, this certification is most commonly recognized in the Commonwealth countries.

ACCA vs CMA: Application and Qualification Process

ACCA

Similar to the CMA exam, the ACCA has a fairly low barrier of entry. In order to qualify candidates must have 3 GCSEs (General Certificate of Secondary Education — ie.  high school level) and 2 GCE Advanced levels in five subjects, including Mathematics and English.

For those hoping to become an ACCA and holding a bachelor degree, as long as your degree is from relevant material, you may be eligible for exemption from some or all of the papers at the Fundamental Level.

Where the CMA exam prep is solely up to you, the ACCA actively helps prepare you for the exam by providing candidates with study guides, mock exams and approved learning centers (known as ACCA Approved Learning Partners) where you can study.

CMA

The CMA, as you well know, has a low barrier of entry which may be why there is such a low pass rate. Eligibility relies on having any bachelor degree and two consecutive years of managerial work experience.

ACCA vs CMA: Exam Content and Format

ACCA

To become an ACCA you must complete 14 papers in two different levels. This includes 9 Fundamental level papers and 5 Professional level papers. As I mentioned above, depending on your background, you may be eligible for exemption from some or all of the Fundamental papers. Some of the papers are computerized, however not all of them are.

The exam itself is offered only twice a year, in June and December. UPDATE: In 2016 ACCA introduced four exam sessions a year, in March, June, September and December.
Candidates can take it in any of the 170 countries offering it around the globe.

CMA

To earn your designation you must pass two exams:

  • Financial Planning, Performance, and Analytics
  • Strategic Financial Management

Both parts of the exam are computerized and you take them at a Prometric Testing facility. Each exam is 4 hours in length total. Three hours is allotted for 100 multiple-choice questions, plus 30 minutes for each of the two essays.

In order to move on to the essay questions you must have passed the first part with a score of at least 50%.

ACCA vs CMA: Salary

When it comes to salary, the CMA cannot be beat. According to ACCA Global, the average annual salary for an ACCA trainee is approximately £19,300, which is approximately $27,482. Partly qualified ACCAs earn around £25,800 and finalists earn an average of £30,700 annually. This is approximately $36,737 and $43,715 respectively.

On the other hand, the average CMA commands $100,000 as of 2020 and that salary continues to climb. Even at the ACCAs highest level, the average CMA earns over 50% more.

Which is Right for You?

When it comes to a designation it really depends on two factors here, where you want to work and how much income you want to make. Both designations are well respected and growing in global recognition, but the facts remain the same. If you want to work in the United Kingdom or a Commonwealth country, the ACCA may be a better choice. If you prefer to live and work in the Middle East, Asia, or in the Americas and earn a higher salary then there’s no question, the CMA is right for you.

There is no right or wrong answer though. Only you can choose if the ACCA vs CMA is right for you.

  1. Hi Nathan,

I am currently working as an accountant. Is it better to do CMA or ACCA? Does any of the one need mandatory articleship ?

    1. Hi Tania,

The designation chosen should be based on the career path that you want to take.

ACCA would give you a solid foundation in accounting principles and is useful for audits and tax practices. With the CMA, on the other hand, you’ll have the skill set to make financial decisions for a company and hold management accounting or executive positions. CMAs tend to have higher salaries.

Another advantage of the CMA is that it’s a globally recognized certification, while the ACCA is mostly recognized in the UK and commonwealth countries.

Candidates are required to earn their certification in both cases before working as CMA or ACCA.

    1. Hi Shivay,

If you’d like to work in auditing, then ACCA would be a good fit. With the CMA, you’ll have the skillset to work in management accounting and make financial decisions for a company.

      Thanks,
      Nathan

      1. Hello sir, I’m willing to take both the ACCA and the CMA certificates, but I’m confused which one i should start first. ( knowing that i have exemptions of 9 subjects of the ACCA, and i got a 3 year membership for the CMA) so please which one i should do first

          1. Hi Rudy,

As to which one to go for first, either ACCA or CMA, is a decision only you can make. I encourage you to read up on both designations and choose the one that best aligns with your career objectives.

I have an awesome resource that’ll give you a lot more information about career and salary potential as a CMA. Check it out here https://www.cmacoach.com/cma-2015-salary-survey/

I hope the information above helps in your decision-making.

      2. 1. I am from bangladesh. After 12th class which one will help me to build my career faster? ACCA or CMA?
        2. If I try to complete ACCA and CMA both courses, will it be beneficial for me? Or is it unnecessary?

        1. Hello,

It depends on the career path that you want to take.

  2. hi,
I am currently doing ACCA and planning for doing CMA after completion. I don’t have a bachelor degree as CMA considers ACCA as a bachelors degree. I wanted to know the benefits of doing both together without a proper degree?

    1. Hi Yasmin,

Good question! ACCA would give you a solid foundation in accounting principles and is useful for audits and tax practices. With the CMA, on the other hand, you’ll have the skillset to make financial decisions for a company and hold management accounting or executive positions. CMAs tend to have higher salaries.

Another advantage of the CMA is that it’s a globally recognized certification, while the ACCA is mostly recognized in the UK and commonwealth countries.

  3. I am currently doing BSc accounting and finance at a UK university. If I do choose to do CMA, what might I find difficult in terms of understanding? considering CMA is a US qualification.

    1. The main difference is GAAP vs IFRS. But they are covered in the review course to help you pass the exam 🙂

  4. Hi, there I am currently Studying B.com in India and Planning to live and work in Middle East countries like Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Other. So after B.com do I need to take 1-2 year experience in accounting field or directly appear for CMA exam. Which one is better.

    1. Hi Tauseef,

It’ll be easier to fulfill the experience requirement after you take the CMA exam, as you’ll have the knowledge and skillset to quickly advance to management accounting positions.

      Thanks,
      Nathan

    1. Hi Rocky,

I can’t say for the ACCA, but the IMA has been expanding its reach globally and CMAs are in high demand across Europe. For more information about this designation, check out this complete CMA exam roadmap.

      Thanks,
      Nathan

  5. Hi Nathen,

currently, I am in the final year of my b.com from India so what should I choose Acca or CMA India, or CMA us.
which one is good CMA India or CMA us?
which one is good for getting employment opportunities and also I want to settle in Europe?

    1. Hi Christy,

ACCA would give you a solid foundation in accounting principles and is useful for audits and tax practices. With the CMA, on the other hand, you’ll have the skillset to make financial decisions for a company and hold management accounting or executive positions. CMAs tend to have higher salaries.

If you plan to build your career in India, then the Indian CMA is more beneficial as it focuses more on the Indian market and therefore is valued more than the US CMA.

However, ICAI is not much recognized outside of India.

The US CMA is a global certification and if you want to work in other countries too, then the US CMA is the way to go.

      Thanks,
      Nathan

      1. Hi, my name is Arushi . I am pursuing cma currently and I want to work in Australia so can I get a good employment opportunity in Australia or not ?

        1. Hi Arushi,

The CMA is a global certification. The knowledge you’ll obtain studying for this exam will help you excel at a management accounting position in any country you decide to build your career in 🙂

          Thanks,
          Nathan

  6. I want to become a legal counsel in Switzerland. which is better ACCA or CMA? which will get higher salary in Swiss

    1. Hi Ala,

I recommend reaching out to staffing agencies to help you decide which certification would make more sense for your career. CMA and ACCA are generally better suited for those who want to work in management accounting.

      Thank you,

    1. Hi Riddhi, it depends on which country you want to build your career in. Earning either of them will require a lot of dedication.

    1. Hi Annu,

They are both recognized in India, but for more global recognition I would recommend the US CMA.

      Thanks,
      Nathan

  7. I am Chartered Accountant (CA) from India. I am planning to do CMA is there any exemption for me.

    Thank you

    1. Hi Jugal,

Currently, the IMA doesn’t offer any exemptions for Chartered Accountants who are pursuing the CMA designation.

If you have any other questions about the CMA program, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

      Thanks,
      Nathan

  8. Hi Nathan,

Thanks for your information, as I’m based in Malaysia could I take the exam via online? And when will be the course/exam intake?

    Thanks in advance!!!

  9. hI nathan,

I’m both a CPA Aus and CIA. Just recently, I have moved to a management accounting role with heavy emphasis on financial planning and budgeting. I just think if it would be good to get a US CMA or CIMA UK which is quite relevant to my work now. Which one do you think you could recommend best for me, US CMA or CIMA UK? I have heard that CPA Aust and CIMA UK have mutual recognition wherein fully qualified CPA Aus members are required only to take one exam which is the ” Strategic Case Study” paper, but it seems that I like best the structure of the US CMA program as compared to CIMA Uk. Any thoughts on this is highly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Syote

    1. Hi Syote,

It depends a lot on which country you’d like to build your career in: the CIMA is mostly recognized in the UK and the Commonwealth countries, while the US CMA is more global.

Click here to learn more about the difference between these two certifications.

If you have any other questions, don’t hesitate to hit reply!

      1. I recommend choosing the certification based on the country you want to build your career in.

The CMA is a global certification, but the ACCA is recognized mostly in the UK and Commonwealth nations.

  10. Hi Nathan,

    Good day.

May I know CMA exam follows IFRS or GAAP standards? Does Malaysia offer CMA course and what will be the package?

    Thanks in advance!!!

    1. Hi KY

For the CMA exam, candidates learn both IFRS, GAAP and their differences so they are prepared to handle both standards.

I am not aware of any local CMA courses in Malaysia, but if you’d like to study online I recommend our coaching course. It provides an integrated step-by-step study plan and unlimited coaching support which will help you study more efficiently.

If you’re not sure which study method would fit you best, I recommend this article which describes the cons and pros of online vs classroom learning.

Let me know if you have any other questions 🙂

  11. Hi Nathan,
I came to know that for the certification of IMA as a CMA USA we should have 2 years of experience in accounting and finance along with clearing both parts.
So, is the experience in taxation counted as a valid experience for the certificate.

If yes, then, is the experience in Indain tax or any other countries tax except U.S.A
    valid for the requirement.

    1. Hi George,

It might, but it’s best to check that directly with the IMA for they have the last say in that.

      Best wishes!
      Nathan

  12. Hi SIR i had completed my b. Com graduation with 70% and now I am very much confused what i should do between CMA and ACCA
After completing graduation I had already lost 6month do decided but I can’t decide what i should do
So please help me what i should do
And which is easier for me because I am a average student.
    I am from india

    1. Hi Hasan,

I’d recommend pursuing the CMA designation as it’s becoming more globally widespread, and the latest exam syllabus changes are keeping it relevant to the evolving demands of the management accounting profession.

      Thank you,
      Nathan

  13. Hi Nathan,
I am George from India. I am a B.com graduate and have passed the CMA USA part 1 exam.
I want to know if, as a fresher i can find any job in UK after clearing my part 2 exam.
If yes, then how should i apply for the same.
And please, also do tell me if I should consider taking ACCA after this for getting a job with a good salary in UK or CMA alone can fetch me a good salaried job in UK.

    1. Hi George,

Congrats on passing your Part 1 exam!

Regarding a job in UK, I’d recommend reaching out to staffing agencies to help you find the best job position for you, as I’m not very familiar with the job market there.

      Best of luck!

  14. Hi Nathan,
I have just passed 11th grade. I want to pursue a career which is appropriate for me. Personally, I don’t think CA is my cup of tea, so I’ve been considering a few other options like BBA, IPM & CMA. I just want to understand, what is the scope of passing CMA? Is it as difficult as CA? And what job opportunities are likely to be offered after CMA? Will I have to do MBA after CMA? Currently I’m planning to do BBA & ACCA/CMA . But I’m unable to comprehend the next step. I’m a little uncertain about my career at this point which is why I need help.

    Thanks,
    Deeksha.

    1. Hi Raihan,

The CMA exam is very tough so I recommend to focus on it when you don’t have other exams to prepare for. Thanks, Nathan

  15. sir ,please let me know which degree should I persue us cma acca or cpa tget settle outside india as I am ca final student in india.

    1. If you want to pursue a career in management accounting, then I recommend you to opt for the US CMA designation – it’s a global certification recognized in most countries of the world.

But if public accounting is your cup of tea, then the CPA is the way to go.

  16. Hi Nathan
Myself Arjun I had done MBA in finance and currently working in bank as credit analyst. I was planning to go for ACCA because i was looking for a career abroad. As you said earlier in above replies it depends our wish to work in which country. But what am confused is which these course will be right for me ? Which course should I opt?

  17. Hi Nathan!
I wanted to know does CMA has scope in kuwait ? And what would be the package

    Thanks for replying

    1. Hi Mohammed,

Yes, the CMA is well recognized in Kuwait, too.

Check here the coaching course I provide at CMA Exam Academy. It has everything you need to prepare for the exam in the most efficient way and pass it your first attempt, guaranteed.

    1. If you want to advance to an executive or management accounting position, then absolutely yes!

      1. Thanks a lot Nathan!

I have three more conclusions in mind. Please, Help me.

        1. I want to complete part one and you said that it requires just 12 weeks for it. So, tell me, How many hours should I need to study in each day.

Moreover, it is possible to learn 2500 + MCQs and 35 essays questions in mind and its all done in just 12 weeks. (It is my fear).

        2. During exams, Are all MCQ’s questions are numeric based i.e we need to use formulas and calculator and solved in sheets and then tick the right one.(It requires a lot of time) or some questions are statements wise i.e we read them and then tick the right one and hence, no need calculator or do in sheets practically by using formulas.

Can you tell me, Upto 100 MCQ’s questions, How many questions are statement wise or How many questions are numeric based(we need to use calculator and formulas to solved them).

        3. I personally like u because I read your blogs that always motivates not only me but also everyone who reads them to give CMA exam.

So, Please tell me in your package, also includes IMA membership fee and exam registration fee (Both Parts) or I have to pay membership fee and exam fee separately.

Also, I’m HRM. So, tell me which part is best for me first.

I want to complete CMA within 6 Months. So, help me.

        Waiting for your reply,

        With Best Regards.

  18. Hi sir
i am sajid, currently pursuing CMA in uae
i have already joined one of the academy and almost all the units are taught by our trainer,
i came to know later about ur website and offerings
i need some advise & tips from ur side for passing the the CMA part 1 in first attempt.
    warm regards..

    1. Hi Sajid,

If you have a test bank, I recommend you to practice on mock exams and focus on the sections you’re weakest at.

You should aim to score above 85% on each section AND on the full mock exam. This will be a good indicator that you’re prepared for the exam.

Also, make sure that you fully understand the logic behind each answer and practice on your speed, so you can comfortably answer to all 100 MCQs within the allotted 3 hours.

And if you haven’t yet, you need to memorize all formulas by heart and practice to recall them quickly.

This should be enough to prepare you for the exam. Good luck!

  19. Hi Nathan,
I am from science background I would like to do CMA. Is that possible ? . Thank you in advance.

    1. Hi Sankar,

Yes, absolutely. You don’t need an accounting background to pursue the CMA designation.

Check here the roadmap to becoming a CMA to learn more about how to obtain this certification.

If you have any further questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

  20. Hi Nathan

I completed my graduation in Business Administration in 2007. I only got 2 yrs of experience as an Admin Assistant. There has been a long gap in my career. But now I would like to pursue a career in Accounting/ Finance. So Iam planning to do CMA. Will it be wise to choose CMA? Can you tell me which membership i will chose from IMA and other guidelines i should follow. Thank you in advance.

    1. Hi Sana,

Yes, it’s a sensible choice – the CMA is the fastest route to kick-start your career in accounting.

If you’re 32 or younger and reside in the U.S., Canada, or Mexico, then you’re eligible for the Young Professional membership; otherwise you can only get the Professional membership.

For more info on the CMA journey, please check here the CMA exam roadmap.

If you have any other questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out anytime 🙂

  21. Sir,
I have completed my Degree and done ACCA first four papers. Now i want to shift to CMA. will it make a difference in switching like this? and can you suggest a good university in UK?

    1. Hi Ayswasya,

I believe there are no exemptions for candidates who passed the ACCA papers, but it’s best to check that directly with IMA.

I recommend you to enroll in our online coaching course, as it’s more flexible and it allows you to watch and rewatch if necessary the video lessons from the comfort of your own home. You also get to choose your own study time that will fit your schedule best, and a coach who is always ready to help you is only one email away.

  22. Hello!I want to know wheather CMA(US) or ACCA gain a good salary package and job opportunities in INDIA.

  23. sir,
i have completed 12th in science group but now i wish to be a cma .what are the factors that i should follow during this carrier change? will it affect me badly?

    1. I don’t see why it would affect you badly, Sanoj. The CMA is much more likely to give your career a boost and open up new opportunities for you. Check here’s the roadmap to becoming a CMA.

If you have any other questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out 🙂

      1. Hello sir! I m studying in second year degree and i have lot to study…. So i have decided to do cma usa….. Is it right to persue cma usa in undergraduate…. Will it be too stressful for me… I have also decided to do job in india n can go abroad also…
        From India.

        1. Resha, It’s a great idea to study for the CMA exam before graduation. You’ll be ahead of your peers which will help you land a job quicker. Most college students who decide to earn their CMA start studying during their third or fourth year in college. By the time they graduate, they’ll have passed one or both exams.

As to which one to go for, either ACCA or CMA, that’s a decision only you can make. I hope the information presented above helps in your decision making.

  24. HELLO SIR,
I REALLY WANT TO KNOW WHICH IS TOUGHER ACCA OR CMA? IT WILL BE HELPFUL IF U GIVE AN EXACT ANSWER

    THANK U 🙂

    1. Hi Vrinda,

Both the ACCA and CMA have a similar pass rate (ranging from 35% to 45%), therefore I presume that the difficulty level is the same.

However, if you follow a study plan and have a coach by your side to help you out whenever you hit a mental block, the exam may not seem as tough to you. 🙂

Don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any other questions.

  25. Hi, i am pursuing final year bcom after completion of bcom can i go for cma ? & whats the diff btw CMA & CMA (US)

    1. Hi Rahul,

Yes, you can absolutely go for the US CMA. You can fulfill the experience requirement within 7 years after passing the exam.

The Indian CMA is great if you plan to build your career in India. The US CMA is globally recognized, therefore it’s best to opt for it if you plan to work abroad or in an international company.

    1. Hi Sachin,

CMA USA is better recognized in India than ACCA.

Also, the Indian Institute of Cost Accountants has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with IMA (which provides the US CMA certification). Click here to learn more about it.

  26. Dear Sir,
I live in Bangladesh & studying MBA ( Finance). Which one is better for me ACCA or CMA & am i get any Exemption for studying ACCA & CMA ?

    Thanks,
    Mahedey Hasan

    1. Hi Mahedey,

Both certifications seem to be well recognized in Bangladesh, so it’s your call. 🙂

Passing the CMA exam will exempt you from the following papers:
      F1 Accountant in Business
      F2 Management Accounting
      F3 Financial Accounting

      Cheers!

  27. Hey Nathan,
I am still in the process of deciding between various chartered accountancy courses.
Now, I have a few queries, which I hope you could guide me through:

    1. What is the silver lining between ACCA, CPA and CMA, or is there a silver lining? Are there major differences?

    2. I am a bachelor degree holder in Commerce, with a specialization in Marketing. Does that qualify me to attempt for ACCA?

    3. Are these courses, or specifically ACCA, a post-graduate course or what exactly are they? I am an Indian and we are more familiar with the system where there is an undergraduate degree and a post-graduate degree. So I would like to know under which category does ACCA or any of the other courses fit in?

    4. I am planning on doing ACCA in Dubai and that too part-time. Do you think it is a viable option? And ACCA is done part-time, it will typically take around 3-4 years if I am not mistaken right?

It would be great, if you could give me some direction!
    Thank you.
    Archana Benzi :’)

    1. Hi Archana,

It’s best to reach out directly to ACCA to help you with detailed responses to your queries.

I only coach for the CMA certification and don’t want to inadvertently misguide you regarding the ACCA certification.

However, if you have any questions about the CMA program, please don’t hesitate to ask me questions 🙂

  28. Hi NATHAN,

I am a B.com graduate from India. I wanna join CMA from Vidyabharti college kochi, kerela. is it fine to join it through a college.

    1. Hi Anjali,

Online review courses are more popular among CMA candidates and they provide more flexibility and a variety of study tools to help you with your studies and assess your progress.

Please check here my coaching course.

This course provides a step-by-step 12-week study system that allows students to follow it without wasting any time figuring out what or how to study.

It also includes all the study tools you need to succeed in your exam, such as CMA review textbooks (online and in paperback), a test-bank with adaptive learning technology, pre-recorded video lessons that you can watch at your convenience, weekly assignments and 1-on-1 coaching for you to ask as many questions as you need to truly grasp the material.

Let me know if you have any other questions, I’ll be happy to help!

  29. What kind of job i can apply with a CMA in the UK? CIMA has strong presence in the uk, do you think CMA will help me to land any job? Which companies hire CMA in the uk?

    1. You can apply for jobs in the management accounting field.

Your CMA certification is a solid confirmation that you have a mastery of the critical skills and knowledge in planning, analysis, control, and decision support. The knowledge you’ve gained while studying for the CMA exam is very practical and will help you excel at work and become a valuable employee.

I believe international companies may be more eager to hire CMAs in UK. 🙂

Wish you the most success with your career and beyond!

  30. hi im milham now im 19 yrs n im doing my top up degree in business addministration & I decide to do the cma so I have some doubts thats a after cma us can I get then indian cma full exemption & can I get exemption for cima & one more qstn, If I finished my degree then can I get any exemption for the cima plz reply me to all qsn plz.

    1. Hi Milham,

Yes, both institutes have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enable mutual recognition of the certificates. You can learn more here.

As far as I know, there are a few CIMA exemptions available to CMA qualified candidates, but it’s best to check that directly with them.

  31. I am from Bangladesh but live in the UK. Currently doing my Phd, i am planning to get my CMA certification by the end of this year. I don’t have managerial job experience, do you think i will be eligible for the exam?

Besides, what kind of job i can apply in the UK with a CMA designation? Here, they prefer CIMA instead of CMA. But i feel like CIMA is time consuming.

    Your advise will be appreciated.

    Thanks

    1. Hi Yasin,

  35. hy Nathan plz tell me that if I do CMA from ICMAP (institute of cost management accountants of Pakistan ) and then go to America for a job , can it becomes a hurdle for me to get a job because it is a Pakistani certification.

    1. Hi Muhammad,

Unfortunately, the Pakistani certification is not recognized in the USA. If you plan on moving, then it’s best to pursue the US CMA. Click here to learn more about how you can obtain it.

      Cheers!

  36. Hi!
Wanna ask you ,if its good for me to enroll in ICMA(Pakistan ) for CMA ??tell me about the professional degree of this institute ? I’m position holder of ICOM and ICMAP have given scholarship to me , so is it good for me to chose CMA for further studies ??

  37. As I read, Passing rate of CMA all over the world is very low…. and i have cleared my intermediate last year with per-engineering and right now I am doing B.Com, and now I want to do CMA simultaneously So should I go for CMA ?? and if yes so when I can start it ??
    I am form pakistan

    1. Hi Alishan,

With the right set of study tools and about 6 months (3 months per each part) of intense studying, you should be able to pass both CMA exams on your first try. I’ve helped hundreds of CMA candidates pass the exam via my coaching course and I believe it could help you too, check it here.

You can start your preparation whenever you’re ready. The next exam window will be in January-February, so you may still have time to prepare and appear for the exam in the upcoming testing window.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

  38. Dear Nathan,

    Thank you

    1. Hi Nazan,

If you want to work in auditing, then you should go for the CPA, but if you find management more appealing, then the CMA is the right fit for you.

ACCA is great if you plan to work in the UK or commonwealth countries.

  42. Is the CMA certification of any value in Dubai?
I’m from sudan Khartoum and I’m planning to do CMA and hopefully want to start studying? But was not sure that does dubai have any value for this certificate?

    1. Hi Somil,

The CMA certification is highly recognized in the Middle East, especially in the UAE. I’m also observing an increasing number of candidates from UAE taking the CMA exam, so that’s a strong indicator that CMAs are in demand there.

      Cheers

    1. Hi Akhib,

The designation chosen should be based on the career path that you want to take. That’s the best choice.

      Cheers

    1. Hi Akhib,

Yes, of course. You’ll have 7 years after passing the CMA exam to fulfill the education and experience requirements. Click here to learn more.

      Cheers

  43. Thank Nathan, I will check your blog on becoming CMA
Is the CMA certification of any value in Canada?

    1. They have their own certification in Canada which is better recognized there. If you plan to build your career in Canada, then I recommend you to choose theirs over US CMA.

      Best of luck!

  44. Hi Nathan,
I need your help, I have started in 2011, I still have 7 more papers remaining to complete (2 knowledge and 5 professional papers), i feel its a lot of studies and papers. i halted ACCA in 2013 when i couldnt clear F9 papers.
Rightnow in 2017, i havent done any papers past 4 years. i want something short and can be done earliest, based on my research CMA paper seems suitable, what is your advise on this subject matter of my case, should i pursue CMA ??

    1. Hi Mohamad,

Yes, you’re right, the path towards the CMA certification is comparatively short; you can become a CMA in less than a year. Read here for more information on how to become a CMA.

And if you have any other questions, please let me know.

      Cheers!

    1. Hi Fatah,

It depends on which country you want to work in. For the United Kingdom or a Commonwealth country, the ACCA is a good choice since it’s better recognized in these countries.
CMAs thrive mostly in the Middle East, Asia and Americas.

    1. Hi John,

It may be due to the fact that CMAs tend to hold higher positions in a company and employers see them as more capable of holding an executive role.

  45. Hi Nathan

please guide me, i am currently doing cma(us) and want to do acca after that. so i just want to know that whether going in right direction or not and i want to command a good package & place to work is no bar.

      1. First of all thank you for replying
I just want to increase my chances of employment. Actually i am a CA finalist but i have a doubt whether i would make to CA title or not, based on CA inter and graduation , i am gettng 6 papers exemption in ACCA so i m suppose to clear rest 8 papers and In CA final too i have 8 papers. This is the main dilemma for ACCA vs CA.
N I am doing CMA so that i can save my career which is at stake right now.

        1. The CMA is a great designation. My advice is not to try to get all at the same time. Start with one, get certified, then move to the next one.

          1. Hi i am little bit confuse about the scope of acca. I am ca finalist so on the basis of that i am eligible for 9 exemption kids so it’s better to start acca or do cma

          2. I’d recommend the CMA as it’s a more global designation – it’s recognized in most countries and it’s becoming more popular year by year.

    1. Hi Sayalee,

When you register as a member of IMA, a CMA Exam Support Package will be available in your account.

      Thanks and Regards,
      Nathan

    1. Hi Nanda,

ACCA members are allowed to take the CMA exam even without the Bachelor’s degree but there are no exemptions in the exam itself.

      Thanks,
      Nathan

      1. Hello sir,
I am a Company Secretary and Lawyer from India and i want to pursue a globally recognized course so that i can move to another country in the future and not have difficulty finding a good job.
Do you think that CMA or CPA is the right option to pursue.
Also do CMA’s have a good scope in Australia.
        Thanks
        Sayali.

        1. Hi Sayali, the CMA-US is the only management accounting designation with a global recognition. The CPA license is only regional and each country has different tax laws and practices.

    1. Hi Alan,

The CMA exam will definitely focus on enhancing your professional edge. The knowledge and skills learned in the CMA exam is also helpful in becoming an entrepreneur such as financial statements analysis, internal control, cost management and performance measurement and evaluation, to name a few.

      Thanks,
      Nathan

      1. Hi, I have completed 8 papers of ACCA since 3 years and now sylabus is changed it seems to be more difficult than before. And I m doing a job in uae. I want to see a good career growth.
        So I need your help…………..
Should i complete my remaining papers of ACCA or start CMA???

        1. Hi Farhan,

You might benefit more from the CMA certification as it’s better recognized in UAE than ACCA and will help you boost your career.

If you have any other questions, let me know!

        1. ACCA members are allowed to take the CMA exam even without the Bachelor’s degree but there are no exemptions in the exam itself.
