  1. Hi Nathan,

Where can I take the exams if I am located in Canada and planning to pursue CMA US.

Are there any locations in Canada !

    1. The US CMA certification will certainly give you a competitive edge as you apply for jobs in Canada. It’s a global designation, so it’s recognized in Canada too.

  2. Hello, sir. I am planning to take the CMA exam in the Philippines after I graduate college. I am a third year student of Management Accounting. My concern is, would passing the CMA exam in Philippines be recognize in the US? Would I be able to land job opportunities with it? Or do I have to take CMA USA for that?

Looking forward to your reply. Thank you

    1. Hi Garen,

CMA Philippines is a local certification, while the US CMA is a global one.

If you want to build your career abroad, I recommend opting for the US CMA certification. It’s recognized worldwide.

You can find a comprehensive roadmap to earning the CMA at this link.

If you have any other questions, please let me know.

      Thanks,
      Nathan

  3. I am living currently in India and I’ve cleared both the parts of Us CMA exams. Sir I want to ask you is US CMA (IMA) highly recognized and valued by employers of Canada if I’m not pursuing Canadian CMA and will it help me in my future career in that country?

  4. Hi Nathan, I completed my bachelor’s this year and currently enrolling in a master’s program, if I enroll as a CMA student, and complete my exams and work experience requirement, will I get CMA designation before completing my master’s, as I qualify for educational requirement or I have to wait for my master’s to finish, assuming I enroll as a student?

    1. Hey Vishal,

Since a master’s degree is not required for the CMA certification, you can get certified before you complete your master’s if you pass the exam and fulfill the work experience.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

      Thanks,

  8. Hello Nathan,

Does CMA USA (IMA) and CMA, India (Institute of Cost Accountants of India) have a mutual recognition agreement ?

    1. Hi Venkat,

They used to, but, unfortunately, they no longer have a mutual recognition agreement.

  9. Hello,

My name is Umme Hani. I am 23 years old. I have been living in Canada for almost a year now. I initially wanted to pursue CPA but CPA Canada is complicated owing to its credentials. Now, I am looking at CMA as an option. There is CMA Canada too. Honestly, I want to pursue the USA CMA which is flexible. What do you suggest? Is CMA USA valid in Canada?

    1. Hi Umme,

The CMA USA is recognized worldwide due to the breath of the subject matter. It’s applicable in any organization across the globe.

Canada merged their CMA and CPA designations into one, CPA. If the Canadian CPA is too complicated to pursue, obtaining the CMA USA designation will still add value to your resume, and more importantly, the knowledge you’ll gain from it. Thanks, Nathan

  14. Dear Nathan,
    Good day,
My name is Subhan and I would like your advice on how best to proceed. I have just recently completed my BBA undergraduate degree with Specialisation in Finance throught Distance Education. However, I have to ask one thing is my accounting background is weary… so to speak. But I have still taken up the CMA Exam Preparatory Course which leads to the CMA Part 1 and Part 2 Exams. Do you think it is advisable to continue with the CMA course as I am already enrolled in this course. I would very much want to do so.It is just that I feel accounting is not my field…. or it goes above my head at times.
I also have a target of trying for an MBA in International Business later on. I also have many years of work experience behind me.
Would appreciate if you could reply on my personal email to my query. Thanks for your kind support.
    Best regards
    M.A Subhan Rehman

    1. Hi Subhan,

it’s great that you have access to a review course. I would definitely recommend that you continue pursuing your CMA designation and if you want, you can do the MBA after. The cost and time it takes to get a CMA over an MBA is huge so it’s best to start with the CMA.

      Cheers!

  15. Hi, from India. recently enrolled with miles for CMA and opted for Wiley books

    1. Hi Harry,

Yes, absolutely. The CMAs are in high demand and they get paid more. If you want to get into management accounting, make financial decisions for a business or corporation and fast-track your way up the corporate ladder, then this certification is for you.

  18. Hi Nathan,

I did my registration two years back and my registration for three years is expiring on Feb 2018. Suppose if I give the exams by Sep and part 2 by Feb is it possible or I will have to wait until feb now?

    1. Hi Sandhya,

If you can sit for the exams the next 2 windows, then I encourage you to do that, so that you don’t have to pay the CMA entrance again. If you don’t pass one part of the exam by the time your registration expires, you may try reaching out to IMA for an extension.

      Best of luck!

  19. i graduated with a BS in Accounting and technical Management in 2006. I would like to self study right now before i make a decision to go all in as i am still paying for my loans. Are the textbooks sufficient enough with info to help pass the exams?

I am currently shopping for the CMA preparation materials. I am trying out a couple and would like to try yours out too. Would it be possible to have a week without charge just to experience what your program is like? I am quite taken with the Gleim approach. But if yours is better I would be happy to purchase it.

    1. Hi Dilip,

Canada has its own CMA certification (CMA Canada). Unfortunately, CMA USA has no affiliation with CMA Canada. However, I think it may still be recognized by your employer, American Express (US-based company).

    Thanks,
    Mo

    1. Hi Mohamad,

The CMA USA (IMA) does not have mutual recognition agreement with CMA Canada. You may need to take the CMA exam in Canada if you plan to move there.

  32. Hi Nathan,

I am planning on starting out my CMA journey and am glad to have stumbled upon your site, but seem to a bit confused about how to go about and which prep material to choose from.

I am looking at Gliem and Wiley but have only spoken with the institute that uses Wiley and have mostly decided to go with them, I am not sure whether it is a good enough material which should be economical and at the same time help me clear the exams.

I want to give Part 2 in October as it is the last testing window for the year. Is it possible since I have close to 3 months to prepare?

I am currently working as an Auditor (around 2 years) and was also wondering if this can be considered for the work ex portion of obtaining a CMA qualifications.

    Thanks!

    1. Hi Madhu,

Yes, it is possible to prepare for the CMA exam within three months. To help you with your decision, please see my comparison of CMA review courses using this link.

With regards to your work experience requirement, you can complete them within seven years after passing the CMA exam.

      According to the CMA Handbook,

“Candidates for the CMA Certification must complete two continuous years of professional experience in management accounting and/or financial management. This requirement may be completed prior to or within seven years of passing the examination. Academics can meet this requirement if at least 60% of their course load is in accounting and corporate financial management courses above the principles level. Professional experience is expected to be gained in full-time employment. However, continuous part-time positions of 20 hours per week meeting the definition of qualified experience will count toward this requirement at a rate of one year of experience for every two years of part-time employment.

Qualifying experience consists of positions requiring judgments regularly made employing the principles of management accounting and financial management.
      Such employment includes:
      • Preparation of financial statements
      • Financial planning & analysis
      • Monthly, quarterly, and year end close
      • Auditing (external or internal)
      • Budget preparation & reporting
      • Manage general ledger and balance sheets
      • Forecasting
      • Company investment decision making
      • Costing analysis
      • Risk evaluation

Employment requiring the occasional application of management accounting principles such as in computer operations, sales and marketing, manufacturing,
engineering, personnel, and general management will not satisfy this requirement. Internships and trainee, clerical, or non-technical positions do not provide appropriate experience to fulfill this requirement.”

  37. Dear Nathan,

I wanted you to kindly elaborate on CMA Exam marking structure.
my understanding is, its 100 MCQs & 2 Essay Questions.

    100 MCQs= 400 marks (1Q x 4 marks)
    2 EssayQs = 100 marks (1Qx 50 marks)
    Total 500 marks

  38. Hi!

I am an ACCA. I have been studying Wiley CMA books and test bank. Is it sufficient enough to prepare and pass the exam?

  39. Dear Nathan,

Iam sitting for Sep/Oct 2016 Window & currently studying from a 2nd Hand (bought from a Friend) 2015 Edition Wiley Book & test banks.the New/latest edition of 2016 CMA course is out on Wiley website that .
My question is does the 2015 Edition still Relevant/ helpful for candidates sitting for SEP/OCT 2016??? Can an individual pass 2016 exam sittings with 2015 Edition Books/material?

I highly appreciate your kind reply to my inquiry.

    Big Fan of yours,
    Shah!

    1. Hi Shahrayar,

Yes, the 2015 edition is still good for the 2016 exam. The Learning Outcome Statement published by the IMA hasn’t changed since 2015 so there’s no reason to believe 2015 editions are outdated.

Best of luck and wish you exam success in 2016!

      Thanks

  40. I’m graduated from faculty of commerce – Business Administration field

can i study and enter the CMA exam ??

or it’s only for accountant ?

    Thanks & Regards

    1. Hi Ahmed, you absolutely can enter the CMA program. It’s not only for accounting majors. It’s for anyone looking for a lucrative and fulfilling career in management accounting.

  41. I am a post graduate in economics and working in a bank. I want to be a CMA. pls tell me your opinion.

    1. Hi Razu, I think it’s a great option if you are considering a career in management accounting. I don’t know much about your role at the bank you work at, but I’m sure they need management accountants just like any other organization.

  42. Hello Nathan, I hold bachelor degree in Finance 2012, I actually don’t have deep experience in accounting management and finance field but I do have decision making role at my work plus family business. Anyways, I bought Wiley books part 1 and 2 (2016 edition). Which one of your product would you suggest me to buy? I don’t prefer buying another book since I’ve heard that Wiley is the best option for my case (correct me if I’m wrong). Also, I was wondering, I’ve known from reading your answers that your online study plans take around 12 weeks. Is it possible and flexible for me freely to extend it more? I feel like I’m kind of under pressure with lots of things to do like work, and other classes and interest, and I’m not in a hurry to pass the exam. I’m ok to study each part for 5 or 6 months. So is it fine? Other than that I’m very willing to start registering 🙂 Thank you!

    1. Hi Fatema,

Since you already bought Wiley yourself, I suggest to enroll in my Lite Course since you are interested in studying with me. It’s a lowered priced course created for candidates who already own textbooks and a test bank.

The course is designed to be taken for 12 weeks but it’s flexible if you choose to study longer. I will have a to make a few changes to your program so that you may study at your own pace. When you are ready click here to enroll 🙂 See you inside the course Fatema. Thank you

  43. Hi am Diana..I am a level 400 bcom student currently a full time student and a higher national diploma holder…can I still pursue the cma

    1. Hi Diana,

Yes, you can pursue the CMA designation even if you are still in college. Remember that it requires about 15 to 20 hours of dedicated study time per week to prepare for the CMA exam. If your schedule allows for it then great 🙂

  44. Hi Nathan – I did B.COM from Pakistan 10 years ago, have no practical experience in accounting. Currently working as business analyst for last 7 years for a manufacturing company, have experience in transfer pricing.

Based on that should i go for Gleim, if not, what do you reckon?

  45. Hi Nathan,

I need to know, whether your materials will be sufficient enough to prepare for the exam and clear my CMA exam.

Even though i have good amount of experience i couldn;t able to grow i feel CMA clearance will help.

    1. Hi Muthu,

My Academy provides all of the necessary material to successfully prepare and pass the CMA exam. We use Wiley CMAexcel textbooks and testbank in addition to all my exclusive training tools.

  46. Hi nathan , awaiting your response on the previous questions that i had sent to u by email..Anyways here it is : I gave the exam and the essay window opened automatically. DOes that mean that i have passed the MCQ section? ie scored above 72%?

    1. Hi Kartik,

It means that you scored above the minimum so you were able to proceed to the essay section.

  47. Hi.. I’m preparing for cma part with hocks study material and gleims software is it enough to pass exam.?

  48. Hi Nathan,

Great website. I currently work in public accounting and have been doing so for the past year and a half. However, I’ve come to the conclusion that I don’t really like public accounting. I love business, and I love accounting, so I’m thinking obtaining the CMA and moving to private would be the best decision. Would you agree with this?

    Thanks,
    Dan

    1. Hey Dan, I would agree with your conclusion. One of the main reasons I went for the CMA is because the knowledge I’d gain would help me in business and entrepreneurship. I’m not a fan of public accounting either.

Check out my #1 Online Coaching Program if you are interested in being coached by me.

  49. Hi Nathan,
I am planning to sit for the CMA. Till now I have 5 years of experience in the corporate accounting field, mainly dealing with account reconciliations, preparing journal entries etc. Do you think CMA will help me in my career? I was initially planning for CPA but audit, tax doesn’t interest me also I don’t want to join public accounting. How much value it has without the relevant work experience? Really appreciate your response. Your website is very informative.

    1. Hi Rashri, The CMA will definitely help you in your career in private accounting. It’s known that CMAs get promoted faster than non certified peers and earn a lot more as well. It’s a small investment when you compare it to the lifetime value you’ll benefit from.

Check out my Academy if you are interested in working with me: CMA Exam Academy.

  50. Hi
I want to know eligibility criteria for the CMA Course. I have done 10+2 (53.33%), BA (Maths) (48.42%) , M.Com (44.67%), MBA (Finance) (55.92%) , and all the courses have been done through distance education. Am I eligible for the CMA? If yes, than for which course, Foundation or intermediate. and How to apply for that.
    Please guide.
    Regards
    Navdeep

    1. Navdeep, as long as your degrees and MBA are from an accredited institution, it doesn’t matter if it was through distance learning or on site.

  51. Hi Nathan,

Great informative website! I am currently deciding whether to take the CPA or CMA. I obtained my BS/MS Accountancy degree in the U.S. back in 2011. I did sit for 2 parts of the CPA but didn’t manage to pass while working at a Big 4 accounting firm in non-audit function. I left the firm in 2013, moved back to hometown Hong Kong and switched to non- accounting/finance industry for about a year now. After all, I still think it will benefit me more in the long run to have a professional qualification. My goal is to refresh and strengthen my accounting knowledge and be able to understand financial statements / make financial decisions for a business and hence get a career in accounting/finance. (not necessarily going back to public accounting) .

Would you suggest pursuing CPA or CMA for my case?

    Appreciate your help!

    1. Hi May,

Thanks for reaching out. Based on what you’ve shared, the CMA will be a better fit. It looks like you are interested in the managerial aspect of running a business rather than compliance, audit and taxes. Plus, the CMA is a global designation and it carries weight no matter where you live. The IMA is working really hard to promote the CMA designation in China and it’s gaining traction 🙂

  52. Hi
I recently gave Part 1 on 25th Feb. A lot of theory based questions came instead of practical ones. I got through to the essay section which was better than MCQ. What are my prospects of passing. If I got 50% MCQ’s right I have a better chance of passing?

  53. Hi,
u said that your study guide Will tell us on what to focus to study,so is this for every topic in cma???

And what about the new topics which was added recently , did your. Study guide Take this in consideration??

  54. Hi Nathan,

Thanks for all the information that you have shared on this website. It was very helpful to me during my studies, I read through lot of stuff from your website and decided to pursue this course. I studied using Gliem (starting July 2014), I already met the education and experience criterion hence directly gave exam in Sep. 2014 (for Level 1) and I am very happy to share with you that I have cleared Level 1 in my first attempt this year.

Currently, waiting on results for Level 2. Keep doing the good work!

    Best Regards,
    Sayujya

    1. That’s fantastic Sayujya! Super happy for you 🙂

Keep me posted with your results for Part Two.

      Nathan

  55. Hello Nathan!

I am a final year student pursuing my bachelors in accounting in India. I am registering myself with IMA next week so that I can appear for the CMA exam in the Jan-Feb window. With the best luck, I should graduate in April 2015 in addition to completing the CMA exams. My primary concern is the job prospects for a student with just an undergraduate (3 years) degree and the CMA certificate with no prior experience. Are the possibilities any good?

Thank you very much for this website. It has proven to be extremely beneficial.

    Aashika.

    1. Aashika,

Your job opportunities will be better than not having the CMA credential. On recent IMA survey, they found that young people with the CMA credential gained the most from it and made 90% more in wages than those without the credential.

  56. is it true that you have to click “save” button on every essay question before you end the section? I was back and forth to check my answers and it was saved even though I did not save it.. but someone told me that I had to save it… is it true..? I hope not…

    1. Chan, yes it’s important that you save your work. The system may save your work but it’s always safer to do it manually.

      1. Hi Nathan,

I did the same mistake. Forgot to hit the save button. I was also checking back and forth but was saved automatically. My Gleim material is also auto saving in essay wizard therefore I was getting used to it. Will it be fine??

        Ash

        1. Hi Ash, I think you’ll be fine since you checked and the system auto-saved your answers 🙂

  57. Hi Nathan

Thanks for responding to other people’s queries as it helps everybody!

I have a specific query though, may be you can help in that.

    – I have joined IMA and paid the membership fee ($235). Now I understand I am required to pay certificate entrance fee ($240) and then exam fee ($395) to appear for exam?

    – I am aiming for late October exam date as I am taking off from work in September end. My question is whether you have any idea on the probable dates of CMA exam in the month of October 2014. My test centre will be in Qatar. Will I be able to get something late October?

    Appreciate your quick response.

    Thanks
    Ali

    1. Hi Ali,

Sorry for my late reply. Testing dates vary and you should check with your local testing center and make an appointment at least a month in advance.

  58. Hi Nathan,

I have done Master of Commerce and MBA (Finance) from India long back in 1995-1997. I want to pursue CMA but not sure which review system to buy. In India, I have two options; (1) join contact classes that offers study with Wiley review system or (2) purchase Gleim review system for self study.

Considering, that i prefer books over computer study and may require thorough understanding of the concepts, which option should I choose from the above? Also I have apprehension whether Wiley test preparation software is enough (in comarision to Gleim) to pass the exams?

    Rgds,
    Alpana

    1. Hi Alpana,

Both are good options. Wiley and Gleim have excellent test banks and textbooks.

To get a very thorough coverage of the topics, I would suggest Wiley. Gleim is excellent but it’s geared more towards those who have a solid accounting background.

If you are interested, check out my flagship course, CMA Exam Academy. It’s a very effective online video prep-course and I use Wiley materials along with my own, which I ship to India for free.

Let me know if you have any other questions.
      Nathan

      1. Hi Nathan,

Thanks for the quick reply. However, I just compared the prices of both and think that the price of Gleim review is quite lesser than the Wiley. I would like to select Gleim due to its cost advantage.

Given my background, do you think choosing Gleim review system for self study would be fine in my case?

Since, I intend to migrate to Canada in about couple of years, how are the prospects for job in Canada with IMA CMA? Though I understand that in Canada there are three major Accounting bodies (under unification process) but my perspective is to have something such as IMA CMA rather than not have any international qualification when I land in Canada. I am looking at something which will give me preparedness for job as well as some degree of confidence being out of touch with studies. Also, I don’t have any international qualification.

Your feedback on both the points will be highly appreciated.
        Regards,
        Alpana

    1. Milan,

No there isn’t in my opinion. The exam is not easier nor harder based on an exam window. Take it in the window that best fits your schedule.

      1. Hi Nathan,

Thank you for the reply. My next concern is, whether there’s any definite format regarding the number of theory questions and practical questions that will come for exam.A friend of mine said there’ll be more theory than practical questions.

        Thanks and regards,
        Milan

        1. Milan,

It’s very hard to predict how many theory vs practical questions you’ll get. It’s all random. My advice is to always be prepared to solve problems. Don’t rely on theory only.

          Nathan

  59. Hi Nathan,

I am really enjoying and learning a lot from your site. I was initially considering going for my CPA but given I don’t have any public accounting experience (I work at a University) nor do I want to work for a public firm, I think the CMA is the better option for me. Not really sure what I should do first. Should I start studying with a course? Or should I register with the IMA and pay the registration fee to see if I’m qualified for the exam? I have a BS in Hospitality Management and an MS in Administrative Studies with a concentration in Financial Economics. If its the former I’m not sure what course is best. I think I am best suited for a self study option, taking a lot practice questions but having a detailed resource to research/understand the topics. Any thoughts/guidance here would be very very helpful.

    thanks!
    Kate

    1. Hi Kate,

Thank you for your kind words. I’m glad you are finding the site helpful.

I would suggest to register with the IMA, pay the entrance fee and register for the exam 3 to 4 months ahead. This will give you a deadline and a target to aim for. No messing around 🙂

Gleim has an excellent learning system. I would suggest that you check them out. I don’t think there’s enough time to prepare for the Sept/Oct testing window so I think you are better off taking your exam in the Jan/Feb testing window.

The CMA exam will change some in 2015 so don’t buy your learning system just yet. Wait until they come out with the 2015 edition. I will be announcing it here as well so keep coming back for the latest news.

I hope I answered your questions. If you have more don’t hesitate to ask.

      Nathan

      1. Hi Nathan,

Thank you very much for your quick response and your guidance. Do you suggest taking both exams in the same testing window?

        Kate

  60. Hi,

I pursued Masters in Computer Science and currently working in IT industry. I have greater affinity to Finance. If I complete CMA course, whether I will get oppurtunities to grow, or the preference will be only for Accounting experience or Accounts background students with CMA. I am confused whether to take up the course or not.

    Thanks,
    Annapoorani

  61. Hi sir,

I am a B.com graduate and I finished my studies in the year 2007, there is a big gap of stopping studies, Is it possible for me to complete CMA, Kindly guide me what are the precautions i have to take before enroling for the exam.

    Thanks.

  62. Hello Nathan,

I purchased Gleim last week, and thank you for the 10% discount. I am interested in your study guide as well, will your study guide coincide with the Gleim study material as well?

    1. Hi Terrence,

The study plan in the guide does not coincide with the Gleim study material but it can be used if you choose to study based on topics and not in the order of the Gleim books. But aside from the study plan, the guide is packed with valuable content. Not to mention the 2 exam formula guides as bonuses 🙂

  63. Hi Mr. Nathan

    Good Day!

I am Muqeet Ur Rehman. I held the CMA exam on 28Oct2014. During the registration by mistake I enter the wrong spelling of my name like Muqeet Ur Rahman. By mistake in Rehman Spelling instead of “E” i put “A” my correct name is Muqeet ur rehman in all study document and NIC.
This kind of mistake can make the problem for me in future or in Exam day?
And let me know can I change my name or Not?

    Thank

    1. Muqeet,

I would highly encourage you to reach out to the IMA and get this corrected. On exam day, you’ll need to show identification and if your name doesn’t match IMA’s records it will be a problem.

  64. Hi Mr. Nathan,

I am a simple B.com and working as an accountant since 2005 in a group of co’s in middle east. i want to become CMA . please help me how to enroll with IMA and self study is enough to pass the exam, i have Gleim CMA book both part and Part 1 for Hock.

  65. I want to ask that Is cma mean cost and management accountants? which I m doing at institute of cost and management accountants of pakistan [ICMAP]

    1. Fayaz,

CMA stands for Certified Management Accountant. It’s a global designation governed by the Institute of Management Accountants.

  66. Respected Sir,
My name is Ruchika. I have purchased gleam material for cma part 2. Is it sufficient to clear the exam in first attempt.

    Kindly reply

    1. If you prefer to self-study, Gleim CMA is definitely more than enough to prepare and pass the exam.

    1. hi,
Im currently working as assistant accountant in a Jewellery company right now for one year.Im also a CPA. is my work experience now can be credited as a continuing experience to be a CMA?

      1. Hi Jonah,

To get a concrete answer on questions about working experience is to contact the IMA directly. My understanding is that one needs to be in a managerial position or in a decision-making role.
